This book sets the grounds for a new approach exploring cultural mediators as key figures in literary and cultural history. It proposes an innovative conceptual and methodological understanding of the figure of the cultural mediator, defined as a cultural actor active across linguistic, cultural and geographical borders, occupying strategic positions within large networks and being the carrier of cultural transfer. Many studies on translation and cultural mediation privileged the major metropolis of Paris, London, and New York as centres of cultural production and translation. However, other cities and megacities that are not global centres of culture also feature vibrant translation scenes. This book abandons the focus on ‘innovative’ centres and ‘imitative’ peripheries and follows processes of cultural exchange as they develop. Thus, it analyses the role of cultural mediators as customs officers or smugglers (or both in different proportions) in so-called ‘peripheral’ cultures and offers insights into an under-analysed body of actors and institutions promoting intercultural transfer in often multilingual and less studied venues such as Trieste, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, Lima, Lahore, or Cape Town.

Hoffmann von Fallersleben ist als Verfasser der deutschen Nationalhymne sowie vieler Kinderlieder ("Alle Vögel sind schon da", "Ein Männlein steht im Walde") bekannt. Doch darüber hinaus gibt es noch viele Facetten zu entdecken. Hoffmann war Dichter und Gelehrter, Entdecker von Sprachdenkmälern und Volksliedsammler, Kirchenliedforscher und politisch engagierter Liedermacher. Als Herausgeber und Bearbeiter altniederländischer Literatur wurde er zum Mitbegründer der Niederlandistik. Wegen seiner kritischen Gedichte wurde Hoffmann 1843 als Professor an der Breslauer Universität entlassen. Man entzog ihm die preußische Staatsbürgerschaft und verwies ihn des Landes. Hoffmann irrte daraufhin quer durch Deutschland und konnte immer wieder bei Freunden Unterschlupf finden. In diesen Jahren war er mit seinen in hohen Auflagen verbreiteten Gedichten einer der Wegbereiter der Revolution von 1848. Die letzten Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte er als Bibliothekar des Herzogs von Ratibor in Corvey. Der schwierige Charakter dieses Mannes und sein umtriebiges Leben machen es nicht leicht, zu einer gerechten Bewertung zu kommen. Diese Biographie unternimmt den Versuch, Hoffmann Gerechtigkeit widerfahren zu lassen und seinen historischen Standort zu bestimmen.

Der vaderen boek gaat over de beoefening van de Middelnederlandse letterkunde, en met name over de geschiedenis ervan. In zeventien bijdragen schetsen moderne specialisten in dit vak leven en werk van een aantal van hun voorgangers. Wie de galerij van deze, chronologisch geordende, geschreven portretten van 'vak-vaders' langsloopt, ziet een beeld opdoemen van het ontstaan, de opkomst en de voortschrijdende professionalisering van de medioneerlandistiek. De vakbeoefening begint met het verzamelen van oude handschriften met Middelnederlandse teksten. De teksten vindt men aanvankelijk vooral de moeite waard vanwege hun historische en taalkundige betekenis. Maar in de loop van de negentiende eeuw begint men oog te krijgen voor de literaire waarde en de charme ervan. Om de teksten goed te kunnen bestuderen worden omvangrijke projecten aangevat, zoals het Middelnederlandsch woordenboek, maar ook worden in deze periode belangrijke tekstedities gepubliceerd. Met deze werkinstrumenten binnen handbereik komt de tekststudie goed op gang, om in de twintigste eeuw al snel uit te waaieren in een steeds rijker spectrum van specialisaties en benaderingswijzen, van volkskunde tot analytische bibliografie, van retorica tot receptie-esthetica, uitmondend in de cultuurhistorische benadering van de Middelnederlandse letterkunde.
