Since the mainstream racial awakening to pervasive and entrenched structural racism, many organizations have made commitments and adopted practices to increase workplace diversity, inclusion, and equity and embed these commitments in their organizational missions. A question often arises about how these concepts apply to research. This paper discusses how organizations can build on their specific commitments to diversity, inclusion, and equity by applying these principles in the research enterprise. RTI International’s framework for conducting equity-centered transformative research highlights how incorporating principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity requires a departure from mainstream practice because of historical and intentional exclusion of these principles. Drawing on methodologies of culturally responsive evaluation, research, and pedagogy; feminist, Indigenous, and critical methodologies; community-based participatory research; and theories of social transformation, liberation, and racial justice, this organizing framework illustrates what this departure requires and how research can serve liberation and social justice by transforming the researcher, the research content, and the day-to-day practice of conducting research. Centering the work of seminal scholars and practitioners of color in the field, this paper provides a holistic framework that incorporates various research approaches and paradigms intended to shift power to minoritized and marginalized communities to achieve social transformation through research.

The LGBTQIA+ community is a strong, resilient, and diverse community that has been at the forefront of disrupting systems of oppression. However, research continues to stigmatize LGBTQIA+ people and exclude the community’s priorities. In response, many researchers, community advocates, and governmental organizations have called for the prioritization of inclusive, equity-centered research with LGBTQIA+ populations. Given the lack of “gold standards” that currently exist for such research, the purpose of this article is to digest and expand upon eight actionable priorities for engaging in equity-centered research with LGBTQIA+ populations: meaningful LGBTQIA+ data, safety, granularity, evolving identities, construct relevance, community-based research, intersectionality, and equity-centered research. By engaging in these practices, researchers can help dismantle systems of oppression that drive outcomes and opportunities for LGBTQIA+ populations, as well as shift narratives away from deficit-framing research and toward strength-based research. This article presents these considerations for researchers not as an exhaustive checklist, but rather as a resource for engaging in equity-centered research that meaningfully characterizes, protects, and celebrates the joy of LGBTQIA+ communities.

Black and Latine transgender and gender diverse (trans/gender diverse) individuals are often underrepresented in general population studies as well as those specific to the LGBTQIA+ community. This study sought to identify effective means of engaging Black and Latine trans/gender diverse persons into research studies. A community-led process enhanced the likelihood of successfully meeting this objective. We gathered qualitative data via a virtual focus group of adults who self-identified as trans/gender diverse and Black and/or Latine. To stimulate discussion about effective recruitment strategies, barriers, and incentives for research participation, we developed a semi-structured guide. The focus group processes incorporated trauma-informed practices. We conducted qualitative analysis using thematic analysis. Four Black, three Latine, and one multiracial trans/gender diverse individuals participated in the focus group. Participant comments indicated that trust in research staff and sponsors and trans/gender diverse persons’ leadership in study processes increased interest in participation. Recruitment materials that encouraged participation portrayed Black and Latine trans/gender diverse persons, specified how barriers to participation will be overcome, assured a safe study environment, and detailed financial compensation commensurate with topic sensitivity. Previous negative experiences were a barrier to future study enrollment. Participants weighed the anticipated emotional burden of participation against the perceived community benefits of the research.

Adolescent Public Mental Health written by Patricia Gail Bray and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-23 with Medical categories.
This book presents an innovative public mental health model addressing the global crisis of declining mental health among adolescents. Despite the scholarly and public media attention given to post-pandemic adolescent mental health, few published sources present a sustainable, scalable and multisector collaborative solution that includes attention to the social determinants of health, equity, and prevention, together with mental health literacy education and early intervention. This book takes a public health approach to address this need and is inspired by the authors' experience creating and implementing change in adolescent mental health systems. While prevention, together with diagnosis and treatment, are the most effective ways to address mental illness, a systems-level approach has only recently appeared in the applied mental health scientific literature. Unlike cardiovascular disease and cancer, mental health promotion and mental illness prevention have been slow to gain traction in the U.S. However, leading professional associations are beginning to acknowledge the value of a public health approach to adolescent mental health and the need to support public health and mental health intersectoral policies. The concepts presented in this volume draw on three primary systems: public health, mental health and education. The authors present 24 recommendations that are relevant for scholars, practitioners and leaders involved in adolescent mental health. Among the topics covered: U.S. and global adolescent mental health, public health, and school mental health Why a systems change is needed in adolescent mental health How to implement an adolescent public mental health model Taking action with systems change Adolescent Public Mental Health is essential reading for professionals in mental health, public health, social work, and medicine who are interested in moving to a more integrative, multisectoral approach to adolescent mental health. Educators and academic institutions who teach our future leaders will benefit from understanding the new model, which can be seamlessly included in secondary school education. Clinicians, practitioners, school principals and superintendents can adopt the model and collaborative processes, described in the demonstration project, to respond to the mental health challenges they encounter every day.

Emerging scholars from groups that have been historically excluded from and are currently othered in research careers are vital to developing innovative approaches to studying and remedying the world’s most challenging equity and social justice issues. In predominantly white institutions, scholars from othered groups may feel tokenized and pressured to conform to the status quo if employers do not commit to support them in thriving. The Emerging Equity Scholars (EES) program is a belonging intervention created for people from othered groups embarking upon professional research careers that was piloted from 2022 to 2023 at RTI International. This paper explains EES’s conception of holistic mentorship, which builds belonging by focusing on well-being, equity-centered research, community building, honoring diverse perspectives and lived expertise, and sharing power and resources. We describe how EES centers well-being by cultivating practices among program participants that support mindfulness, healing, and joy, and discuss EES’s research mentorship strategies that recognize emerging scholars’ knowledge, honor their experiences, and support their exploration of novel research approaches. We conclude with reflections from pilot participants about how EES cultivates a sense of belonging within the program, the broader work environment, and the field of research, and how the EES program will be adapted for future cohorts.
