This study describes the British government’s policy towards China during the first phases of the undeclared Sino-Japanese war, starting in July 1937 when the conflict in North China culminated in all-out hostilities; and ending in September 1939 when the outbreak of the war over Poland forced the British government to turn almost all its attention to Europe. The dilemmas confronting British policy-makers in the Far East are analysed together with the implementation of their subsequent solutions. Attention is focused on the question of British interests in China and on the decisive factors and considerations which determined British policy and Britain’s role in the Sino-Japanese war. Questions concerning the safety of the British subjects and the commercial community in China and their influence on the decision making process, the attitude towards Soviet influence in China and prospects of Communist take-over are also discussed. In the final analysis the book examines the widely debated subject of appeasement in its Asian context. It is argued that Britain pursued a policy towards Japan which gained strength without producing a Far Eastern Munich

In 1937, Japan blundered into a debilitating war with China, beginning with a minor incident near Peking (now Beijing) that quickly escalated. The Japanese won significant battles and captured the capital, Nanking, after a horrific massacre of its citizens. Chiang Kai-shek, China's acknowledged leader, would not surrender--each side believed it could win a war of attrition. The U.S. sided with China, primarily because of President Roosevelt's personal bias in their favor. Drawing on a wealth of sources including interviews with key players, from soldiers to diplomats, this history traces America's unexpected and unpopular involvement in an Asian conflict, and the growing recognition of Japan's threat to world peace and the inevitability of war.

As a foreign correspondent in the 1930’s, Haldore Hanson covered the Chinese civil war and the invasion of China by Japan. Traveling rural roads on bicycle, he rotated among the warring forces and was occasionally arrested by one side or the other. The present volume, “Humane Endeavor”, which was first published in 1939, was praised as a rare close-up from the remote front lines. Owing to his expertise, the State Department hired him as an official in 1942. After World War II, he became assistant director of the Point Four development aid program for Asia. “A complete coverage of the war years, with pictures of outstanding personalities. [Hanson] reports on the fall of Peiping, on war on the Mongel front, on the sieges of Shanghai, Nanking, on Japanese atrocities, war in the air, finance and man power, Japanese rule in conquered areas, guerilla warfare, border republics, [and] experiences with the 8th Route Army. Interesting reading it holds the interest throughout, and has the vitality of a first-hand record.”—Kirkus Review
