Britain's Bloodless Revolutions explores the relationship of the emerging category of Literature to the emerging threat of popular violence between the Bloodless Revolution and the Romantic turn from revolution to reform. The book argues that at a time when the political nature of the Bloodless Revolution became a subject of debate - in the period defined by France's famously bloody revolution - 'Literature' emerged as a kind of political institution and constituted a bloodless revolution in its own right.

In 1688, a group of leading politicians invited the Dutch prince William of Orange over to England to challenge the rule of the catholic James II. When James's army deserted him he fled to France, leaving the throne open to William and Mary. During the following year a series of bills were passed which many believe marked the triumph of constitutional monarchy as a system of government. In this radical new interpretation of the Glorious Revolution, Edward Vallance challenges the view that it was a bloodless coup in the name of progress and wonders whether in fact it created as many problems as it addressed. Certainly in Scotland and Ireland the Revolution was characterised by warfare and massacre. Beautifully written, full of lively pen portraits of contemporary characters and evocative of the increasing climate of fear at the threat of popery, this new book fills a gap in the popular history market and sets to elevate Edward Vallance to the highest league of popular historians.

After the War of 1812 the United States remained a cultural and economic satellite of the world’s most powerful empire. Though political independence had been won, John Bull intruded upon virtually every aspect of public life, from politics to economic development to literature to the performing arts. Many Americans resented their subordinate role in the transatlantic equation and, as earnest republicans, felt compelled to sever the ties that still connected the two nations. At the same time, the pull of Britain’s centripetal orbit remained strong, so that Americans also harbored an unseemly, almost desperate need for validation from the nation that had given rise to their republic. The tensions inherent in this paradoxical relationship are the focus of Unfinished Revolution. Conflicted and complex, American attitudes toward Great Britain provided a framework through which citizens of the republic developed a clearer sense of their national identity. Moreover, an examination of the transatlantic relationship from an American perspective suggests that the United States may have had more in common with traditional developing nations than we have generally recognized. Writing from the vantage point of America’s unrivaled global dominance, historians have tended to see in the young nation the superpower it would become. Haynes here argues that, for all its vaunted claims of distinctiveness and the soaring rhetoric of "manifest destiny," the young republic exhibited a set of anxieties not uncommon among nation-states that have emerged from long periods of colonial rule.

The British Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in history. At its peak, it spanned over 13 million square miles and included over 450 million people. The empire's influence can still be seen today in the English language, the Westminster system of government, and the common law. This book tells the story of the British Empire, from its humble beginnings to its eventual decline. It is a story of conquest, colonization, and exploitation. It is also a story of innovation, progress, and cultural exchange. The British Empire began with the Age of Exploration in the 15th century. English explorers set out to find new trade routes to Asia, and they soon came into conflict with other European powers, such as Spain and Portugal. By the 17th century, England had established colonies in North America, the Caribbean, and India. The British Empire continued to grow throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 18th century, Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, which gave it control of Canada and India. In the 19th century, Britain expanded its empire in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The British Empire reached its peak in the early 20th century. At this time, Britain controlled over a quarter of the world's landmass and population. However, the empire began to decline after World War I. Britain lost many of its colonies in the war, and it was forced to grant independence to others. The British Empire finally came to an end in 1997 with the handover of Hong Kong to China. However, the legacy of the empire can still be seen today. The English language is spoken by over 1.5 billion people, and the Westminster system of government is used in many countries around the world. This book is a comprehensive and accessible overview of the British Empire. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history of the world. Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In November of 1747, the people of Boston rose up against the British Navy and their impressment practices. They placed a deputy sheriff in the stocks, seized officers of the Lark as hostages, and broke the windows of the Council chamber. #2 Following in the tradition of English riots, American colonists took to the streets to demonstrate their opposition to the British taxation which followed the French and Indian War. By the end of 1765, the stamp distributors in all colonies except Georgia had resigned their posts. #3 The Stamp Act riots were a result of the British Parliament trying to stamp out American independence. They were a mix of poor laborers and seamen who were angry at the rich merchants and officials who flaunted their wealth or abused their power. #4 As the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, many colonists objected to the abuse of power by the British Parliament. The issue was simple and straightforward: no taxation without representation.
