'A dazzling perspective on the current EU referendum debate' Prospect Magazine Britain has always had a tangled, complex, paradoxical role in Europe's history. It has invaded and been invaded, changed sides, stood aloof, acted with both brazen cynicism and the cloudiest idealism. Every century troops from the British isles have marched across the mainland in pursuit of a great complex of different goals, foremost among them the intertwined defence of parliamentary liberty in Britain and the 'Liberties of Europe'. Dynastically Britain has been closely linked to countries as varied as Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France. In this bracing and highly enjoyable book, Brendan Simms describes the highlights and low-points in the Euro-British encounter, from the Dark Ages to the present. The critical importance of understanding this history is shown in the final chapter, which dramatizes the issues around British relations with the European Union and the how, far from being a narrowly legalistic or financial concern, a referendum on continued membership raises all kinds of fascinating questions about both the United Kingdom's own horizons and what it can offer to the Union's vision of itself. Britain's Europe is a vital intervention at a moment of both great danger and great opportunity.

Formula One: Made in Britain is one of Formula One's last untold stories. As a centre of technical excellence for over thirty years. Britain is at the sharp end of the worldwide motor sport industry, and playing ever harder to win. Most of the sport's Grand Prix teams are based in the UK and many of them have British managers and designers who act as a showcase for the UK's skill base - past, present and future. The success of Britain's Formula One industry has gone largley unrecognised outside the close-knit world of the racing aficionado. Now, with Formula One: Made in Britain, Clive Couldwell reveals what makes this industry tick and why many of the world's players choose to come here. He explores Motorsport Valley, an area which covers the south and Midlands of the UK, where 75 per cent of the world's single-seater racing cars are designed and built, and talks to many of F1's leading lights. Winning in F1 depends on innovation and performance-critical engineering, and in this fascinating and insightful book, Clive Couldwell show how UK research and development are leading the world.

Britain Since 1900 A Success Story written by Robert Skidelsky and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-01 with History categories.

How successful has Britain been in the twentieth century? This is the question Robert Skidelsky poses in this fascinating analysis of a century in which Britain lost an empire, fought two world wars, founded the welfare state and weathered economic turbulence and technological upheaval. We are accustomed to judging nations by their success in increasing or maintaining power - by these measures Britain has failed to thrive, but what of quality of life, prosperity, political, cultural and moral values? The British people are richer and healthier than in 1900. Despite cataclysmic events and some fraying at the edges, our society is more democratic and tolerant, and our constitution of liberty has been preserved, at a cost. Bu inequality of wealth income is much as it was before 1914, finance is scarcely less proud or industry more content, and history continues to be made by the elite. Starting with an assessment of the material, political, cultural and moral resources Britain brought to the twentieth century, Skidelsky turns to how events and the actions of Lloyd George, Churchill, Thatcher and Blair had an impact upon them, debating the nature of success, and what the future might hold for the country.

The Evil Necessity written by Denver Brunsman and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-19 with History categories.

A fundamental component of Britain’s early success, naval impressment not only kept the Royal Navy afloat—it helped to make an empire. In total numbers, impressed seamen were second only to enslaved Africans as the largest group of forced laborers in the eighteenth century. In The Evil Necessity, Denver Brunsman describes in vivid detail the experience of impressment for Atlantic seafarers and their families. Brunsman reveals how forced service robbed approximately 250,000 mariners of their livelihoods, and, not infrequently, their lives, while also devastating Atlantic seaport communities and the loved ones who were left behind. Press gangs, consisting of a navy officer backed by sailors and occasionally local toughs, often used violence or the threat of violence to supply the skilled manpower necessary to establish and maintain British naval supremacy. Moreover, impressments helped to unite Britain and its Atlantic coastal territories in a common system of maritime defense unmatched by any other European empire. Drawing on ships’ logs, merchants’ papers, personal letters and diaries, as well as engravings, political texts, and sea ballads, Brunsman shows how ultimately the controversy over impressment contributed to the American Revolution and served as a leading cause of the War of 1812.
