This book survey Britain ́s foreign policy since 1870. Conventional accounts stress the rulers ́ benevolent rhetoric: I present the evidence that refutes this superficial, liberal view. Britain ́s economy is the key to understanding its foreign policy: capitalism causes a conflict-ridden foreign policy. The rulers ́ focus has been on seizing profits from abroad, for which they have sacrificed the welfare of the British people. British governments - Conservative, Liberal and Labour alike - have represented the tiny minority who own the means of production, and have opposed the great majority who have to work for a living. The ruling class ́s external focus has also damaged relations with other countries and helped to produce the two recurring types of war - wars between rival empires and wars against national liberation.

Pax Britannica? is a study of Britain's international role and foreign policy during the century of her imperial greatness. The study shows how her foreign policy was affected, and to some extent, dictated by her domestic political issues. In her stimulating and readable study, Dr Chamberlain explains the how the whole nature of foreign-policy making changed in the nineteenth century. Once the preserve of a small handful of monarchs and professional diplomats, it was transformed by the expansion of the fanchise, the influence of the press and the mobilisation of public opinion by men such as Disraeli and Palmerston.

First published in 1938, this volume represents a selection of unpublished and published documents dealing with foreign affairs, from the rise of the Younger Pitt to the death of Salisbury. It contains both official papers and private letters; speeches and other public statements of policy. The Editors have had access to a large number of unpublished materials, public and private, so that many of the documents that they have chosen are new and reveal a striking continuity of ideas in British diplomacy, despite opposed parties and even opposing policies.

Thatcher S Diplomacy written by Paul Sharp and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Great Britain categories.

British foreign policy under Margaret Thatcher has been completely misunderstood by friends and foes alike. The former praise her strong personality, her willingness to stick up for Britain in Europe, and the loyal support she provided the Americans in the last decisive flare up of their rivalry with the USSR. Her foes condemn her for precisely the same reasons. Both agree, however, it is not for her contribution to foreign policy that she will be remembered, as she remained stuck in the categories of the Cold War and earlier. Sharp takes issue with this reading and by assessing her whole international record from 1979 to 1990, demonstrates how Thatcher emerged as the first authentic statesman of the post-Cold War. It was Thatcher who realized that the fading of the Cold War provided new opportunities for independent and assertive action by the European great powers, and it was Thatcher who recognized the revived importance of nationalism, not just as a constraint upon international cooperation, but as the positive cornerstone on which all such cooperation must still be built.
