The British Grand Prix is the oldest event on the World Championship calendar and the feud over its future, now secured, went on for more than ten years. This is the full story, told from the inside, of the business and personal battles between the British Racing Drivers Club, the organizers of the race, and Bernie Ecclestone, Formula 1's commercial rights holder. It is a story that has it all, combining high-octane personal jealousies (Sir Jackie Stewart and Bernie Ecclestone) and high finance told by a journalist with access to all the characters involved, and who himself served for two years as a BRDC director at the height of this drama.

Motor racing originated on French public roads and could be said to have begun in Britain in May 1899 with a series of time and load carrying trials at Crystal Palace Park in London. Later in the same year, races for several classes of vehicle- cars, motor cycles and tricycles- were held on a small banked oval cycle track in the park. Organization was quickly imposed by American newspaper magnate- Gordon Bennett who established the Gordon Bennett cup for international competition in 1900 and rules were established. Striving for more speed, engines became more powerful and noisier and after 1903, races were held on relatively short circuits of public roads on which the cars made a number of laps. A universal 'Formula' or set of rules for the engine capacity and weights of competition cars was devised as early as 1904 and a 1906 event organized by the Automobile Club de France was held over closed triangular 65 mile circuit at Le Mans and called a Grand Prix- Large Prize. The term Grand Prix soon became associated with any motor race where international competition was invited. In 1908 a 'Grand Prix' race being held in the United States followed by an Italian Grand Prix in 1921, a Belgian and Spanish Grand Prix in 1924 and finally, a British Grand Prix in 1926. As the taste for motor racing developed so did the circuits including Aintree where Stirling Moss scored his first World Championship Grand Prix victory in 1955, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Brooklands and Goodwood and Early British Grand Prix highlights the development of British motor racing circuits over the last century.

LEWIS HAMILTON is the undisputed British hero of Formula One. His phenomenal successes have seen him move to third on the all-time Grand Prix winners list and, for a record-equalling third time, plant a British flag onto the mountain-top of motor racing. With behind-the-scenes insight into the intense early rivalry between Hamilton and his teammate Fernando Alonso which threatened to derail the young Briton’s dream, and the low-down on the ‘spy-gate’ scandal, this biography describes how Lewis handled the intensity of the media scrum around his relationship with Nicole Scherzinger and kept his dignity to emerge triumphant as he racked up sensational wins around the world. Now he has even joined iconic speedsters Damon Hill and Bradley Wiggins as a BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner. From 2015’s momentous clinching of a second consecutive World Championship in Texas to the ongoing bitter rivalry with former friend Nico Rosberg -in which the German once seemingly engineered a deliberate high-speed crash - bestselling sports author Frank Worrall traces the slipstream of Hamilton’s incredible career as the fastest driver on the planet. This is the ultimate story of the driver who has gone from being the rookie Sir Jackie Stewart said ‘has rewritten the rule book’ to a triple world champion, accelerating into pole position to perhaps be called Britain’s greatest ever race driver.

It is now 50 years since the Formula 1 World Championship was created. This book celebrates the involvement of British drivers during those five decades of racing. It is a unique work in that it provides a detailed record of the achievements of every British driver ever to start a Grand Prix. In all, 137 British drivers have started Grand Prix and this book records every one of them. From the world famous names like Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Damon Hill, to the less well-known racers of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, this is a unique and definitive record. A driver summary, detailed career record and Grand Prix statistics are included for each of the 137 drivers. Illustrated by many rare photos covering most of the drivers, the book is a wonderful record of a period of British involvement in Grand Prix racing that started with drivers like Reg Parnell and Bob Gerard and ended with Damon Hill, Eddie Irvine and David Coulthard.
