This book reflects the current state of research in the field of the spiritual in British literature, where spirituality is understood as a culturally-determined, universal phenomenon or a factuality of humanity, consisting of the living apprehension of the 'Sacred' during rare gratuitous moments of illumination. With critical essays by scholars working in various disciplines (English studies, music, the arts, psychology, theology, etc.), the book explores a corpus of encoded narratives of - as well as reflections on - the 'Sacred' in British literature, from the Late Middle Ages to the present. Multi-disciplinary in nature and interdisciplinary in method, British Literature and Spirituality illustrates the hermeneutic potential of readings that transcend the disciplinary boundaries of spiritual writings. The Oxford Handbook Of Early Modern English Literature And Religion written by Andrew Hiscock and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

This pioneering Handbook offers a comprehensive consideration of the dynamic relationship between English literature and religion in the early modern period. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were the most turbulent times in the history of the British church and, perhaps as a result, produced some of the greatest devotional poetry, sermons, polemics, and epics of literature in English. The early-modern interaction of rhetoric and faith is addressed in thirty-nine chapters of original research, divided into five sections. The first analyses the changes within the church from the Reformation to the establishment of the Church of England, the phenomenon of puritanism and the rise of non-conformity. The second section discusses ten genres in which faith was explored, including poetry, prophecy, drama, sermons, satire, and autobiographical writings. The middle section focuses on selected individual authors, among them Thomas More, Christopher Marlowe, John Donne, Lucy Hutchinson, and John Milton. Since authors never write in isolation, the fourth section examines a range of communities in which writers interpreted their faith: lay and religious households, sectarian groups including the Quakers, clusters of religious exiles, Jewish and Islamic communities, and those who settled in the new world. Finally, the fifth section considers some key topics and debates in early modern religious literature, ranging from ideas of authority and the relationship of body and soul, to death, judgment, and eternity. The Handbook is framed by a succinct introduction, a chronology of religious and literary landmarks, a guide for new researchers in this field, and a full bibliography of primary and secondary texts relating to early modern English literature and religion.

"Mysticism in English Literature" is a literature critic of English literature from the viewpoint of the philosophies of the writers. As author Caroline E. Spurgeon explains, "Two facts in connection with mysticism are undeniable whatever it may be, and whatever part it is destined to play in the development of thought and of knowledge. In the first place, it is the leading characteristic of some of the greatest thinkers of the world—of the founders of the Eastern religions of Plato and Plotinus, of Eckhart and Bruno, of Spinoza, Goethe, and Hegel. Secondly, no one has ever been a lukewarm, an indifferent, or an unhappy mystic. If a man has this particular temperament, his mysticism is the very center of his being: it is the flame which feeds his whole life; and he is intensely and supremely happy just so far as he is steeped in it."

s suspicious as one often is of the other, literature and spirituality enjoy a rich and deep relationship. They have been inextricably linked since narrative and symbol first met in the earliest biblical writings. Story, poetry and drama have always been used to express the human search for religious meaning and to modulate the divine voice. Equally, 'Take Christianity out of English literature,' asks Ronald Blythe in this book, 'and what is left?' In this fascinating and spirited collection of essays the novelist Penelope Lively explores fiction writing as an act of creation with its clear spiritual resonances. A. N. Wilson inveighs against the modern church for its desecration of the language which shaped and nurtured it. The poet David Scott looks at the lonely, subversive calling of the priest-poet from Caedmon to R. S. Thomas, and Richard Marsh considers David Jones's writings in the First World War where, for many, religion turned to mud and the only way across that vast no man's land was by the same ancient way of myth and symbol, the way that literature and spirituality have travelled together since the beginning.
