This book investigates how British diplomats in Tehran and London reacted to the overthrow of the Shah and the creation of an Islamic Republic in Iran, which had previously been a major political and commercial partner for London in the Middle East. Making substantial use of recently declassified archival material, the book explores the role of a significant diplomatic institution – the resident embassy – and the impact of revolutions on diplomatic relations. It evaluates the performance of those charged with British diplomacy during the Iranian Revolution, as Britain’s position fell from favour under the post-revolutionary regime. Examining the views of key diplomatic personnel at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and British ministers, this study seeks to explain how British policy towards Iran was shaped and the means of diplomacy employed. In charting the evolution of Britain’s diplomatic relationship with Iran during this period, a number of factors are considered, including historical experience, geography, economics, world politics and domestic concerns. Landlord villages dominated Iranian land tenure for hundreds of years, whereby one powerful landlord owned the village structures, surrounding farmland, and to all intents and purposes, the village occupants themselves, a system that in some cases remained in place up to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In Oman, mud-brick oases were home to most of the rural population right up until Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970, and required inhabitants of mud-brick houses to relocate into new concrete block buildings. Historical Archaeology and Heritage in the Middle East explores these everyday, rural communities in Iran and Oman in the 19th and 20th centuries, through a combination of building analysis, excavation, artefact analysis and ethnographic interviews. Anhand von bisher wenig beachteten Quellen aus britischen und iranischen Archiven zeigt die Studie, wie der Schah von Persien die britische East India Company ab 1800 bewusst aus den Beziehungen herausdrängte und so aktiv zur "Verstaatlichung" der Außenbeziehungen beitrug. Indem er Statuspolitik zum Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Beziehungen machte, gelang es ihm, Persien als souveräne Monarchie in der entstehenden globalen Staatenordnung des 19. Jahrhunderts zu etablieren. Im 19. Jahrhundert begann demnach nicht einfach flächendeckend Neues, vielmehr wirkten diplomatische Praktiken der Frühen Neuzeit im globalen Kontext in widersprüchlicher Weise fort.
