Excerpt from British Place-Names in Their Historical Setting As to the Belgae being the first Brythonic invaders Of Britain, it is clearly against the statement of Caesar, and other wise not credible. A tribe called Scots belonging to the Goidels are known to have passed from Ireland into Alban (scotland) in the fourth century of our era, the latter country being then Occupied by Bry thons and Picts.' In the fifth and sixth centuries a.o. A southern Brythonic people, under pressure from invading Teutonic tribes, passed over to Armorica in Gaul, in which Gallic speech had then died out, and gave their name to the country - Brittany. The influence of each of these Celtic peoples is still to be traced in our place-names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. EVERYONE KNOWS OF THE ARTIFACTS of England's distant past from bones and fossils to jewellery and tools are buried beneath the soil of our country and regularly unearthed by archaeologists. Less appreciated is that there is a quite different historical trail which leads us back through many centuries of our country's history. However, this trail is not buried within the soil, but within our place-names. The earliest sounds of which were uttered by occupants of these islands over 2600 years ago and which have survived into many of the place-names we use today. Place-names have a special significance for a great many people, for their surnames are also names of English places: some will have local feature names such as Brook, Hill, Bridge, Wood and Field and some will have names recalling the village, town or district from which a mediaeval ancestor originated. What's in an English Place-Name? offers a fascinating chance to trace the names within our localities back to their roots and to give an absorbing insight into our district's histories. Discussing the origins of hundreds of place-names in England this book provides a comprehensive understanding of how place-names arose

Excerpt from A Short History of England, for School Use Situation.-the British Isles lie just off the west coast Of Europe. They look on the map like cakes of ice crumbling away from a huge glacier. There are about five thousand islands in all. Some of them are mere ledges of rock that can serve only as nest ing-places for sea-birds. Some of them, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, the Hebrides, Skye, Mull, the Isle of Man, and the Isle of Wight, are large enough to furnish food and Shelter to human beings, and have been inhabited from time immemorial. Two only, however, Great Britain and Ireland, are of sufficient importance to figure in the world's history. Excerpt from English Surnames: Their Sources and Significations Book, casting aside the new importation, were, in the great majority of cases, obsolete by the end of the twelfth century, and of those which have survived and descended to us as surnames, well-nigh all are devoid of diminutive or patronymic desinences - a clear proof that they were utterly out of fashion as personal names during the era of surname formation. The Norman invasion was not a conquest of our language, but it was of our nomenclature. The 'saturday Review' may still demand that we shall view all as English, and obliterate the distinctive terms of Saxon and Norman, but in doing so let us not forget facts. The language which preceded the Norman Conquest is still the ave/aide of ordinary converse. The nomenclature of that period went down like Pharaoh's chariot, and like Pharaoh's chariot, which for all I know lies where it did, was never recovered.
