Excerpt from British Ruling Cases, Vol. 2: From Courts of Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Australia and Other Divisions of the British Empire, Extensively Annotated Privy Council. The jurisdiction of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council rests on the royal prerogative, by virtue of which the King has the right to review any decision of any court in his transmarine dominions, criminal or civil. As new constituted, it consists of the President of the Council, the Lord Keeper or First Lord Commissioner of the Great Seal of England, and all privy councilors who have held these offices or hold or have held high judicial omce, that is to say, who have been Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, Judges of the Supreme Courts of England or Ireland or of the Court of Session in Scotland. The sovereign may also appoint two other privy councilors to be members of the committee. Privy councilors who are or have been judges of the Supreme Court of Canada or the superior court of any province of Canada, or the superior court in the seven Australian colonies, or of Cape Colony, or Natal, or of Newfoundland, are also members of the Judicial Committee. This tribunal has appellate jurisdiction in admiralty cases and over appeals from courts outside the United Kingdom, except so far as the prerogative in this behalf has been surrendered. Its decisions, although in the form of a recommendation or report to the King in Council, are not subject to review. "This series of reports is in a sense a continuation, but with a decided expansion, of the plan of the English ruling cases, as it takes the cases from the British empire, instead of from England only, but it continues the English ruling cases in the sense that it will include the most important cases from the English courts decided since that series terminated."--Pref.

Excerpt from Burma Under British Rule and Before, Vol. 1 of 2 Many books are now written about distant lands by those who have only a very slight acquaintance with them, and such usually form very pleasant reading. Burma has received a fair share of this sort of attention from casual visitors, but the present work is not one of these books written in lighter vein. It is intended to be a comprehensive treatise on one of the richest provinces of our Indian Empire, and it embodies knowledge and experience acquired there in a service extending over nearly twenty-five years. During that time great political, commercial, and social changes have taken place throughout Burma and among the Burmese, and the main objects of this book are to describe these, and to show how they have already affected and are bound still more to affect the land and the people. It tries to describe the latter as they were, I and as they now are. The historical sketch of Burma has been confined solely to what is necessary in order to understand the position of affairs at different times. The author feels that some explanation is needed for the appearance of these volumes. The work was undertaken for the simple reason that no comprehensive book has been published about Burma since it came entirely under British rule in 1886, although the record of the material progress achieved seems well worthy of being submitted to the public in some such convenient form. Matters affecting the life and habits of the Burmese have also been treated in a way which it is hoped may be of use to those going to spend the best years of their lives in Burma, and this is the reason why so many Burmese terms have been introduced and explained. An endeavour has at the same time been made to indicate various commercial openings for investment of capital, because the development of a rich Indian province ought surely to be worthy of consideration by British capitalists. Excerpt from Burma Under British Rule and Before, Vol. 2 There can be doubt that one of the greatest of commercial problems in the near future concerns itself with the opening up of China to trade. And no country can possibly be more affected by this problem than Great Britain, whose commercial interests in China at the present moment bulk much larger than those of any other foreign nation. Whilst the South African troubles remain unsettled, progress must almost necessarily be retarded in pushing British interests in south-western China; but certain aspects of the problem are so intimately connected with Burma as to require careful consideration, and particularly with regard to the much-talked-of proposal to extend the north-eastern branch of the Burma railway system across the mountains and valleys of Yunnan to some objective on the Yangtse river. Apart from the purely commercial point of view, this project is so closely concerned with political and strategic motives that it is hardly possible to consider and criticise it adequately without first of all taking a purview of the affairs of Britain and France in Indo-China, and giving a summary of the chief events out of which the existing positions of these two Powers have arisen. While Britain was gradually, through force of circumstances, acquiring the Burmese territories after the first (1826), second (1852), and third (1885) Burmese wars, France has during the last generation and a half possessed herself of a still larger territory on the eastern side of the Further Indian peninsula. Case Studies In Us Trade Negotiation Volume 2 written by Charan Devereaux and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-01 with Political Science categories.

Between 1992 and 2000, US exports rose by 55 percent. By the year 2000, trade summed to 26 percent of US GDP, and the United States imported almost two-thirds of its oil and was the world's largest host country for foreign investors. America's interest in a more open and prosperous foreign market is now squarely economic. These case studies in multilateral trade policymaking and dispute settlement explore the changing substance of trade agreements and also delve into the negotiation process—the who, how, and why of decision making. These books present a coherent description of the facts that will allow for discussion and independent conclusions about policies, politics, and processes. Volume 2 presents five cases on trade negotiations that have had important effects on trade policy rulemaking, as well as an analytic framework for evaluating these negotiations.

Nancy Christie innovatively and significantly transforms the writing of Quebec history between 1763 and 1837 by locating Quebec within new British practices of imperial governance asserted in the wake of the Seven Years War. Breaking with the conventional master-narrative of the era as one ofgradual integration between French- and English-speaking communities, accompanied by incremental political and social liberalization, Nancy Christie presents the six decades following the Conquest as a period of assertive British strategies for assimilating Quebec's French and Catholic majority, andrefurbished authoritarianism deployed to arrest the spread of revolution in the Atlantic world. Brilliantly advanced, this new narrative of post-Conquest Quebec builds upon entirely new research meticulously gleaned from over 20,000 cases from the criminal and civil judicial archives and a sustainedexamination of both official and unofficial political and social discourses. This study charts both the British practices of colonial rule, which sought the assimilation of non-British "others" through both formal modes of law and governance, and the consumption of British manufactured goods, and the contestation of these through the daily resistance of ordinary men andwomen. In so doing, Christie identifies Quebec as a case study with which to open a new trajectory in the wider study of the British Empire. Her striking conclusion urges a shift in historical focus from the interaction between European colonizers and racialized others, to the centrality ofpractices of rule designed to govern European subaltern peoples.
