A provocative analysis of a nativist movement. The creation of a huge artificial lake in western Canada led to the flooding of prime hunting and trapping territory of the Sekani Indians thus depriving them of their traditional occupations and livelihood. This caused considerable social distress resulting in a drastic increase of alcohol consumption and violence and seriously disrupting social relationships. Some Sekani made efforts to create new ties of solidarity through the adoption of Pan-Indianism however this ideology did not prove effective. The author concludes that their lack of unity stemmed from the same factionalism which characterized their personal relationships.

The “beautiful and wise account” of Martin Luther King Jr. and Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, who “gave greater life to all of us through their remarkable friendship and shared vision of nonviolence” (Joan Halifax, author of Standing at the Edge). The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a heartbroken letter to their mutual friend Raphael Gould. He said: "I did not sleep last night. . . . They killed Martin Luther King. They killed us. I am afraid the root of violence is so deep in the heart and mind and manner of this society. They killed him. They killed my hope. I do not know what to say. . . . He made so great an impression in me. This morning I have the impression that I cannot bear the loss." Only a few years earlier, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr. as part of his effort to raise awareness and bring peace in Vietnam. There was an unexpected outcome of Nhat Hanh's letter to King: The two men met in 1966 and 1967 and became not only allies in the peace movement, but friends. This friendship between two prophetic figures from different religions and cultures, from countries at war with one another, reached a great depth in a short period of time. Dr. King nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He wrote: "Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity." The two men bonded over a vision of the Beloved Community: a vision described recently by Congressman John Lewis as "a nation and world society at peace with itself." It was a concept each knew of because of their membership within the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international peace organization, and that Martin Luther King Jr. had been popularizing through his work for some time. Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrus shows, took the lineage of the Beloved Community from King and carried it on after his death.

For more than fifty years, the international ecumenical community at Taizé has had an enduring and unparalleled attraction for young adults, whether Christian or not. Its roots go back to wartime France, when a young man, who was to become Brother Roger, settled in the impoverished and largely abandoned village of Taizé. He dreamed of beginning a community life of work and prayer among the poor, and quickly found himself looking after Jewish refugees. Later, he and his companions tended German prisoners of war and orphaned children. The Community became more visible in 1949, when the first seven Taizé brothers made a lifelong commitment to monastic life. The Rule of Taizé, was written by Brother Roger a few years later and has been a reference point for the Community ever since. After Brother Roger's untimely death on 16th August 2005 - when he was attacked and killed while praying with more than 2,000 young people - the Community republished The Rule in French and later prepared a fresh translation into English. Though written with the Community in mind, this work of deep insight and broad vision is a mine of wisdom for all those seeking to live in harmony with others and with God.

THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV:- is a novel written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and published in 1879–80. This book is generally considered to be his masterpiece and probably greatest novel. Although it is the story of Fyodor Karamazov and his sons Alyosha, Dmitry, and Ivan, it is also a story of patricide and Dostoyevsky introduces a love-hate struggle with psychological and spiritual implications. There persists a search for faith, for God, throughout the novel which is the central idea of the work. Ivan’s repudiation of God’s world is elucidated in the famous “Legend of the Grand Inquisitor.” There is a response to Ivan that is contained in the preaching of the monk Zosima. It clearly states that the secret of universal harmony is achieved not by the mind but by the heart. Alyosha, Dostoyevsky’s attempts to create a realistic Christ figure. The focuses on Dostoyevsky’s theological and philosophical themes: the origin of evil, the nature of freedom, and the craving for faith. While tracing the dynamics of Ivan’s guilt, the author provides a psychological justification for Christian teaching.

Roger Schutz-Marsauche, known as Brother Roger, is one of the most influential figures in Christianity in the twentieth century. He was founder and first prior of the Taize Community in France, where tens of thousands of young Christians flock each year for their distinctive music and contemplative style of worship, spending time in prayer and reflection. But it is the community of monastic brothers, from differing Christian traditions and over twenty-five different countries, who makes this contemplative experience possible. They stand as a 'parable of community' and as a sign of unity in the midst of a divided world and a divided Christianity. This first volume of Brother Roger's journals covers his arrival in Taize during World War II through to the 1960s, in which young adults found the hill of Taize in their searching. These collected reflections on personal and current events offer an illuminating portrait of the founder of Taize, bringing to light key aspects of the community putting into practice the vision that inspired him. The second volume of Brother Roger's Journals covers the years 1960-1972, focussing on the birth and initial preparation of a 'Council of Youth', a project catalysed by the crisis in the Roman Catholic Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. Brother Roger also details the ongoing life of the community, the paths of his personal spiritual journey, and other encounters across those remarkable years.
