Browning's Beginnings was first published in 1980. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Browning's Beginnings offers a fresh approach to the poet who, among major Victorians, has proved at once the most congenial and most inscrutable to modern readers. Drawing on recent developments in literary theory and in the criticism of romantic poetry, Herbert F. Tucker, Jr., argues that Browning's stylistic "obscurity" is the result of a principled poetics of evasion. This art of disclosure, in deferring formal and semantic finalities, constitutes an aesthetic counterpart to his open-ended moral philosophy of"incompleteness," Browning's poems, like his enormously productive career, find their motivation and sustenance in his optimistic love of the future—a love that is indistinguishable from his lifelong fear that there will be nothing left to say. The opening chapters trace the workings of Browning's art of disclosure with extensive and original interpretations of the unduly neglected early poems, Pauline, Paracelsus, and Sordello, and place special emphasis on Browning's attitudes toward poetic tradition and language. A chapter on Browning's attitudes toward poetic tradition and language. A chapter on Browning's plays identifies dynamics of representation in Pippa Passes, Strafford, and King Victor and King Charles. Tucker discusses the pervasive analogy between Browning's ideas about poetic representation and about representation in its erotic and religious aspects, and shows how the early poems and plays illustrate correlative developments in poetics and in the exploration and dramatic rendering of human psychology. The remaining chapters follow the poetic psychology of Browning to its culmination in the great poems of his middle years; exemplary readings of selected dramatic lyrics and monologues suggest that the ways of meaning in Browning's mature work variously bear out the sense of endlessness or perpetual initiation that is central to his poetic beginnings. Tucker thus contends that the "romantic" and the "Victorian" Browning have more in common than is generally supposed, and his book should appeal to students of both periods. Its discussion of general literary issues - poetic influence, closure, representation, and meaning - in application to particular texts should further recommend Browning's Beginnings to the nonspecialist reader interested in poetry and poetic theory.

A History Of Golf written by Robert Browning and has been published by Pickle Partners Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Here is a book which should prove a valuable and every welcome addition to the literature of Golf! Written in a fluent and easy style that makes reading a pleasure, this new history has the merit of literary quality, and the author’s quiet, unobtrusive sense of humour eliminates the slightest suspicion of dullness or heaviness, without in any way detracting from the seriousness of his objective or the dignity and importance that even the most rabid devotee of the Royal and Ancient would claim for it. The work also provides ample evidence of the author’s industry and research, and, in keeping with his position as editor of Golfing, conveys a quiet assurance of authority. The book deals with every aspect of the history of the game, from its earliest beginnings to the modern era of American ascendency. There are 34 chapters and a chronological table covering 600 years from 1353 to the 1950’s. We select here, more or less at random, a few of the subjects dealt with: Seven successive monarchs of the Stuart line as players—The golf of the House of Windsor—Golf as a cross-country game—The Celtic hurley, and the Belgian chole—The Scots game and the Dutch—The origin of golfing terms—Golf before the formation of clubs—Competitions came before clubs—The beginning of the championships—The start of the university match—How golf came to London—The golf boom of the gay nineties—The beginning of golf in America—The evolution of the professionals—Women’s golf originally a part of the feminist movement—Clubs and balls; wooden balls; the old featheries; the coming of the ‘gutties’; the arrival of the rubber core—Course construction—The rise of the golf architects—The evolution of the rules—American thoroughness makes golf a science instead of an art—International golf; the Walker, Ryder, and Curtis Cups—The game as a preserver of ancient landmarks—The genius of golf, the only game in which the worst player gets the best of it.

The History of Browning Firearms is a captivating and wonderfully illustrated chronicle of John M. Browning, an influential and legendary gunsmith. Browning was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1855, and inherited his father's gun making shop. He grew the business and developed it into a highly successful business that developed several iconic firearms, starting with the J.M. Browning Single-Shot Rifle, and including the famous Colt Peacemaker. Browning also cooperated with Winchester to develop a whole range of small arms, including semi-automatic pistols, single-shot rifles, repeater rifles, and machine guns. Browning's designs have covered a whole range of small arms, from semi-automatic pistols through single-shot rifles, repeater rifles, and machine guns. His enthusiasm and creativity have led many to believe he is the greatest firearms designer of all time. The Origins Of The Final Solution written by Christopher Browning and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-04 with History categories.

The Origins of the Final Solution is the most detailed, careful, and comprehensive analysis to date of the descent of the Nazi persecution of the Jews into mass murder: the Holocaust. Arguing that genocide was not a preconceived plan but rather a discovered possibility, Christopher Browning explains how Hitler's decision to murder the Jews en masse emerged in stages and by a process of elimination that gradually foreclosed plans for their expulsion from Europe. Only in the interval between late September and late October 1941 did the desire to "remove" the Jews intersect with the discovery of acceptable means of killing them on a large scale and with the euphoria of expected victory in Russia, all of which followed on from two years of 'race war' and 'racial imperialism' in eastern Europe that prepared 'ordinary Germans' for this fateful task.

Captain John Browning written by Jess Browning and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-02 with categories.

Captain John Browning was born about 1588 in England, and died about 1662. He allegedly married about the year 1614. Children were George and William in addition to accounts of other children including a Thomas. Sometime around the year 1621, he and his family left England for Virginia where his descendants supposedly established a line of descendants that could be found throughout America. His ancestors go back hundreds of years, primarily in the counties of Gloucestershire and Dorset in England. The interesting thing about him is that there is more speculation and less known about him than of many people in history. This Second Edition is much enlarged and its index contains full names of thousands persons other than Browning as well as subject names. The endnotes reference many of the sources. The Gloucestershire Berkeley family had a large influence on Browning's both in England and Virginia and this work should be viewed as a theory of family history or historical fiction (sometimes hysterical fiction). It is sad that thousands of genealogical records are based on bad information. It is hoped that any citations of this work be done with the proper caveats. Appendixes E and F provides summaries of Captain John's ancestors and descendants from 1255 to 1681 which may or may not prove to be true with improved DNA data and testing. The book also looks at Brown and Browne names for linkages in times where few Browning records were available in Virginia. It uncovered more Browning locations in some Virginia locations where matching Brown and Browne families lived.

"This volume presents poetry Browning wrote in his seventies, his last two books: Parleyings (1887) and Asolando (1889). Both volumes are presented here with previously unknown sources, a wealth of new contextual material, and many textual nuances clarified, giving a fresh view of the last phase of Browning's career. What emerges is a poet more seriously Christian, Protestant, and Liberal than previously supposed, more interested in Britain's destiny and Empire, more enmeshed in the local battles of the 1880s - and a writer of considerable range and wit." --Book Jacket.

Robert Browning A Life Within Life written by Donald Thomas and has been published by New York : Viking Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This sturdy, readable biography is a largely straightforward, largely admiring retelling of the familiar life story: the happy, sheltered, father-educated childhood, which led to ""the extraordinary consistency of Browning's beliefs throughout life""; the ambitious beginnings, early failures; the infatuation with the theater; his bouts of (perhaps psychosomatic) trigeminal neuralgia; the success of "Pippa Passes"; the courtship of invalid Elizabeth Barrett, followed by the marriage and move to Italy; friendships, from the literary to the social/eccentric; and, with Elizabeth's fatally failing health, the beginnings of Browning's aggressive socializing--flirtations, hobbies, country houses. All the important poetry is also discussed, in reasonable, clear, unremarkable terms. The book is a competent, one-volume treatment, free of much old-fashioned Browning-bio baggage.
