Architetto, urbanista, storico e critico di architettura, membro del movimento clandestino Giustizia e Libertà, del Partito d’Azione, di Unità popolare, infine del Partito radicale, docente universitario: la ricca biografia intellettuale e professionale di Bruno Zevi (1918-2000) si snoda lungo tutto il Novecento con un’impronta netta e originale, e un preciso punto di partenza, il 1938. A seguito delle leggi razziali, infatti, Zevi si trasferisce a Londra e, dal 1940, negli Stati Uniti, dove dirige i «Quaderni Italiani» – continuazione dei «Quaderni di Giustizia e Libertà» diretti a Parigi da Carlo Rosselli – e si laurea alla Harvard University. La sua attività prende dunque le mosse all’interno della comunità degli esuli italiani e delle organizzazioni antifasciste negli Usa, in stretta relazione con la diplomazia culturale americana. Con la fine della guerra e l’avvio dello scontro bipolare tra Stati Uniti e Unione Sovietica, l’Italia diviene infatti agli occhi del governo americano un alleato prezioso nella lotta al contenimento del comunismo europeo sia sul piano militare, sia nell’ambito della cultural diplomacy. Nuove domande storiografiche e recenti acquisizioni archivistiche ci consentono, attraverso le vicende di uno dei suoi protagonisti, di mettere in luce aspetti finora sconosciuti dell’emigrazione intellettuale italiana in Usa e dell’avvio della guerra fredda culturale.

Following the centenary of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, this volume features contributions from leading science historians from around the world on the changing roles of the institution in international affairs from its foundation in 1922 to the present. The case studies presented in this volume show the multitude of functions that IUPAP had and how these were related to the changing international political contexts. The book is divided into three parts. The first discusses the interwar period demonstrating how the exclusion of communities of the Central Powers from international scientific institutions imposed by victorious allied countries made IUPAP ineffective until the end of World War II. The second part analyzes the changing roles assumed by IUPAP starting from its complete renovation after World War II. Case studies covering the role of IUPAP in physics education, in metrology, in joint commissions with other unions and in defining the complex relations between pure and applied physics provide examples of IUPAP's impact on the world of science. Part III squarely addresses the science diplomacy aspects of IUPAP during the Cold War highlighting the importance of IUPAP in furthering diplomatic goals and explaining the origin of the pursuit of the free circulation of scientists as the activity that characterized the main function of international unions during the Cold War. Highlighting how often scientific agendas and political imperatives were entangled in the activities of IUPAP, the book analyzes the work of the Union as exercises of science diplomacy, thus contributing to the current debate on the use of science and technology in international relations.

Italy and the UK experienced a radical re-organisation of urban space following the devastation of many towns and cities in the Second World War. The need to rebuild led to an intellectual and cultural exchange between a wave of talented architects, urbanists and architectural historians in the two countries. Post-war Architecture Between Italy and the UK studies this exchange, exploring how the connections and mutual influences contributed to the formation of a distinctive stance towards Internationalism, notwithstanding the countries’ contrasting geographic and climatic conditions, levels of economic and industrial development, and social structures. Topics discussed in the volume include the influence of Italian historic town centres on British modernist and Brutalist architectural approaches to the design of housing and university campuses as public spaces; post-war planning concepts such as the precinct; the tensions between British critics and Italian architects that paved the way for British postmodernism; and the role of architectural education as a melting pot of mutual influence. Nell’immaginario storico elaborato sotto il fascismo, uno spazio originale è stato ricoperto dagli Etruschi. Nonostante le incertezze sull’interpretazione della loro lingua e sulle loro origini, e la prevalenza in Europa della tesi della provenienza orientale, nell’Italia fascista artisti, scrittori e studiosi hanno sviluppato un consenso nazionalista sull’assimilazione degli Etruschi all’interno dell’identità italica, posta alle radici nazionali e razziali del popolo italiano. Con la persecuzione antiebraica, è stata in particolare l’ipotesi dell’origine orientale a essere avversata, per evitare di ammettere l’esistenza di corpi estranei nella composizione etnica italiana. Il libro ricostruisce questa storia e i suoi esiti culturali nell’Italia repubblicana e della Guerra fredda.

Da alcuni decenni l’antifascismo pare aver perso la sua rilevanza nel dibattito civile e storiografico. Anche il Centenario della marcia su Roma ha lasciato sullo sfondo le storie di coloro che si opposero al fascismo sin dagli anni dello squadrismo. Questo libro invece le recupera e le racconta, mettendo al centro il vissuto quotidiano, i percorsi coraggiosi e dolorosi, in nome della libertà, dentro e fuori l’Italia negli anni complicati della guerra civile europea. Si riflette anche sugli antifascismi come ideologie politiche, con saggi che prendono in esame i discorsi e le pratiche delle diverse culture antifasciste e talvolta il loro difficile dialogo. Infine, si aprono alcuni squarci su cosa accade all’antifascismo dopo il 1945, sulle dispute della memoria e sul suo utilizzo nelle battaglie politiche dei primi anni della Repubblica e della Guerra Fredda.
