This completely new manual describes diseases of dogs and cats caused by bacteria, fungi and viruses, as well as protozoans and other parasites. Aimed primarily at UK vets in general practice, the book concentrates on common conditions such as cat 'flu, infectious diarrhoea and pyoderma. It also includes detailed information on a number of important diseases that may be seen in animals imported into the UK. Several infectious diseases that might be seen in quarantined animals are covered but in less depth. Important non-infectious differential diagnoses are noted in the text where appropriate. A problem-oriented rather than a 'pattern recognition' approach has been adopted. Infections are grouped together by affected body systems rather than by taxonomic classification. Thus, all gastrointestinal viruses, bacteria and parasites are considered in one chapter. When an infectious agent has more than one presentation (e.g. canine distemper virus) then one chapter contains the main details of clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and control. Other chapters contain relevant details of clinical signs for the system but the reader is cross-referred to the main chapter for other information. Although the Manual does not provide details of microbial structure, replication, molecular biology and post-mortem findings that are not directly important to the practitioner, modern diagnostic techniques using molecular biology are described. The authors have been drawn from a wide variety of institutions in the UK and were selected for their knowledge of internal medicine and infectious diseases. The text is extensively illustrated throughout with numerous tables, illustrations and flow charts plus quality colour photographs. Clinical Pathology forms the cornerstone of veterinary internal medicine. This second edition of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline clinical Pathology guilds on the strengths of the first edition and incorporates new information. It answers essential questions for busy clinicians in general practice: ? Which tests should be done? ? How should they be carried out? ? How do I get the best samples? ? How should I interpret the results? Biochemical tests are discussed in a clinical setting. Individual chapters feature important body systems or organs that have particular clinicopathological profiles (renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal, pancreatic and skin), while separate chapters cover proteins and electrolytes. Blood gas analysis and urinalysis are also discussed in detail in dedicated chapters. Clinical case examples illustrate how test selection and interpretation are used in real cases, and give readers the opportunity to apply for themselves the information presented in the chapters. Clinical case examples illustrate how test selection and interpretation are used in real cases, and give readers the opportunity to apply for themselves the information presented in the chapters. Cytology is a vital and growing part of clinical pathology, and a large chapter reviews both sampling and interpretation. Chapters on body cavity effusions, CSF analysis, joint and muscle disease, and skin disorders include both biochemical and cytological information. The role of clinical pathology in the diagnosis of infectious diseases is also summarized, with helpful explanations of PCR and MIC. Quick reference appendices summarize the samples required for common tests and list differential diagnoses for many of the abnormalities discussed in detail elsewhere in the book. A major feature of the book are the amazing colour photos which enable the reader to identify normal and abnormal blood cells and cytological changes in a range of conditions. As a team of one clinical pathologists and one clinician, the Editors have created a truly useful manual for clinicians, budding clinical pathologists and veterinary students.

This unique book, written by specialists from the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa, bridges the disciplines of clinical pathology, internal medicine and critical care in a single volume. The Manual is divided into three sections: haematology, haemostasis and transfusion medicine. Within each section, review chapters are augmented by contributions on selected topics of interest to the practitioner. Methods of sample collection and interpretation for routine haematology, haemostatic function and bone marrow analysis are reviewed and new developments, such as flow cytometry for typing leukaemias, outlined. The diagnosis and management of a range of major infectious, immune-mediated and neoplastic diseases of the haematopopietic system are discussed. A chapter on canine babesiosis is timely, given the recent reports of cases in the UK, and a chapter is also included on the feline pathogen Haemobartonella felis. A wealth of excellent colour photographs throughout the book illustrates cell types and abnormalities, plus techniques such as blood transfusion. The range of coverage and the practical information in this Manual will render it of great value in the practice setting. This is a concise and quick reference guide, clinically oriented, based on experience underpinned by published research data. The systems-based approach emphasizes the problem list process utilized by most practitioners when faced with a patient presenting with a single or variety of clinical symptoms. This allows generation of a complete list of infectious disease differentials, and the ability to include or exclude those indicated based on patient risk assessment. Pathogen specific information enables rational choice of diagnostics, therapy, and prognostication for a complete list of small animal infectious disease that includes bacterial, viral, parasitic/protozoal and fungal.

Building on the success of the previous edition, the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology, 2nd edition incorporates not only the new information available since the original publication but also additional chapters on diagnostic techniques and presenting complaints. Part 1 considers diagnostic techniques, with chapters on the approach to a gastrointestinal case, laboratory evaluation, imaging, endoscopy, immunology and biopsy. The completely new chapter on imaging of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas covers in detail the modalities most frequently employed in small animal practice, namely radiography and ultrasonography, whilst also briefly discussing more advanced techniques of Doppler and harmonic ultrasonography, scintigraphy, CR and MRI. The short chapters in Part 2 provide a practical approach to investigating presenting complaints: dysphagia and regurgitation; vomiting; acute and chronic diarrhoea; malabsorption; GI haemorrhage; dyschezia and tenesmus; jaundice; hepatic encephalopathy and infectious diseases. All follow the same basic format: outlining the clinical features, ranking the differential diagnoses in order of importance, and providing step-by-step algorithms for diagnosis. The more traditional organ-based systems approach in Part 3 has been expanded from the previous edition to include chapters on disorders of the oral cavity, perineum and anus, and biliary system. Each chapter is presented in a similar style, starting with a brief description of relevant anatomy and physiology, then detailing diagnostic tests, and concluding with a discussion of the disorders that can be encountered, including their treatment. The completely new final part contains chapters devoted to critical care, assisted feeding techniques, and an overview of therapeutics. The chapters, written by a host of international authors, all experts in their field, are accompanied throughout by full colour illustrations.
