[Letterpress Printing and Book Culture in Wittenberg in the Reformation Period] At the beginning of the early modern period Wittenberg was a renowned centre of German book culture. Book printing and book trade had profound effects both on the spread of the Reformation and on the development of the University of Wittenberg. On the basis of selected topics the present volume analyses the interactions between book production, book trade, Reformation, University and Town with a special focus on the beginnings of letterpress printing and the works of some eminent book printers and editors in Wittenberg.

This open access volume focuses on the cultural background of the pivotal transformations of scientific knowledge in the early modern period. It investigates the rich edition history of Johannes de Sacrobosco’s Tractatus de sphaera, by far the most widely disseminated textbook on geocentric cosmology, from the unique standpoint of the many printers, publishers, and booksellers who steered this text from manuscript to print culture, and in doing so transformed it into an established platform of scientific learning. The corpus, constituted of 359 different editions featuring Sacrobosco’s treatise on cosmology and astronomy printed between 1472 and 1650, represents the scientific European shared knowledge concerned with the cosmological worldview of the early modern period until far after the publication of Copernicus’ De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in 1543. The contributions to this volume show how the academic book trade influenced the process of homogenization of scientific knowledge. They also describe the material infrastructure through which such knowledge was disseminated, and thus define the premises for the foundation of modern scientific communities.

This book presents a varied and nuanced analysis of the dynamics of the printing, publication, and trade of music in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries across Western and Northern Europe. Chapters consider dimensions of music printing in Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy, showing how this area of inquiry can engage a wide range of cultural, historical and theoretical issues. From the economic consequences of the international book trade to the history of women music printers, the contributors explore the nuances of the interrelation between the materiality of print music and cultural, aesthetic, religious, legal, gender and economic history. Engaging with the theoretical turns in the humanities towards material culture, mobility studies and digital research, this book offers a wealth of new insights that will be relevant to researchers of early modern music and early print culture alike.

"Debating the Sacraments argues that Reformation debates concerning baptism and the Lord's Supper cannot be treated in isolation. It demonstrates the continuing influence of Erasmus on Luther's evangelical opponents and examines the role of printing in fanning the public controversy over the sacraments"--

This collection of eight essays, grounded in public lectures, presents the protean and enigmatic Martin Luther from exemplary and representative perspectives (by members of different scholarly disciplines: bibliography, theology, history of law, history, cultural history, neo-Latin philology, German philology and English philology). The heuristic categories of "traditions, contexts and radical changes" allow to focus on individual selections from the enormously rich and different details of the Luther-cosmos, to concentrate on the analysis of Luther's influences as 'reformator' on the one hand and on the other hand to analyze and critically evaluate his deep anchorage in the broader contexts of central Europe's cultural history.

This book is about the creation, relocation, and reconstruction of libraries between the late Middle Ages and the Age of Confessionalization, that is, the era of religious division and struggle in Northern Europe following the Reformation and Counter-Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. At the time, different creeds clashed with each other, but it was also a period in which the political and intellectual geography of Europe was redrawn. Centuries-old political, economic, and cultural networks fell apart and were replaced with new ones. Books and libraries were at the centre of these cultural, political, and religious transformations, frequently seized as war booties and appropriated by their new owners in distant locations.

[Wittenberg Bible Printing of the Reformation Era] In September 1522, Luther's translation of the Bible was printed for the first time by Melchior Lotter the Younger in Wittenberg (»September Testament«). A comprehensive, unlimited printing and distribution privilege granted by the elector made Wittenberg the most important printing location for German-language Bibles in the empire for almost a century. The conference volume on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first Luther Bible highlights essential aspects of printing, illustration, the addition of accompanying texts (»paratexts«) and the ongoing revision of the Luther Bible in numerous, in part richly illustrated, contributions by renowned historians and book scholars. Another focus of the volume is the reception of the Wittenberg Bible editions at the courts as well as their use and reading by the bourgeoisie and the lower nobility.
