Sebenarnya, definisi ilmu bioteknologi diterjemahkan berbeda-beda oleh masing-masing ilmuwan. Namun dari beberapa definisi yang telah dikemukanan mengerucut pada defi nsi dari Primrose dalam bukunya Modern Biotechnology (1987) yaitu penerapan prinsip-prinsip ilmu pengetahuan dan kerekayasaan untuk penanganan dan pengolahan bahan dengan bantuan agen biologis untuk menghasilkan bahan dan jasa. Berdasarkan definisi diatas dapat ditarik pemikiran bahwa akar dari ilmu bioteknologi adalah keilmuan dasar penunjang yang akan memperluas cakupan aplikasi bioteknologi. Oleh karena itu saat ini banyak bermunculan cabang ilmu gabungan yang mengeskplorasi fenomena bioteknologi. Akar keilmuan bioteknologi akan diolah dan direkayasa sedemikian rupa untuk diaplikasikan pada beberapa bidang bioteknologi terapan. Penerapan bidang bioteknologi mencakup hampir keseluruhan kebutuhan hidup manusia, seperti dalam bidang lingkungan dan perairan, pertanian dan peternakan, pengembangan obat, dan masih banyak lagi.

Among the fishes, a remarkably wide range of biological adaptations to diverse habitats has evolved. The conservation, sustainable use and development of aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) is critical to the future supply of fish. The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is the first ever global assessment of these resources, with the scope of this first Report being limited to cultured AqGR and their wild relatives, within national jurisdiction. The Report draws on 92 reports from FAO member countries and five specially commissioned thematic background studies. The reporting countries are responsible for 96 percent of global aquaculture production. The Report sets the context with a review of the state of world’s aquaculture and fisheries and includes overviews of the uses and exchanges of AqGR, the drivers and trends impacting AqGR and the extent of ex situ and in situ conservation efforts. The Report also investigates the roles of stakeholders in AqGR and the levels of activity in research, education, training and extension, and reviews national policies and the levels of regional and international cooperation on AqGR. While its focus is on the use of commercially pro duced feeds in intensive production systems, it is anticipated that many of the practical issues covered will be of equal interest to those fish farmers who make their own feeds and to those who use formulated feeds in less intensive systems. Feeds and feeding are the major variable operating costs in intensive aquaculture and the book is primarily in tended to aid decision making by fish farm managers in areas of feeding policy. The dramatic increases in aquaculture production seen over the past 15 years have been made possible, in large part, by gains in our understanding of the food and feed ing requirements of key fish and shrimp species. A global aquaculture feeds industry has developed and a wide range of specialist feeds is now sold. This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.

The demand for high quality aquacultured products and an increasing concern for resource conservation has led individuals and large corporations to invest time and money in commercial scale recirculating production systems. However, there are relatively few reports of profitable recirculating production systems in operation.
