Excerpt from Building a Successful Sunday School It is not easy to define a successful Sunday school. It is not easy to indicate the many elements which go to make for success. Without undertaking an exhaustive statement, it may suffice to say that the Sunday school which lays claim to success must do two things: (i) it must reach its constituency; (2) it must teach its constituency. Excerpt from Organizing and Building Up the Sunday School IN the preparation of this volume the purpose was to supply a convenient handbook upon the organization, the management, and the recruiting of the Sunday school, to be read by those desiring information upon these subjects. But after the larger part of the work had been prepared a desire was expressed that the method of treatment be so modified that the volume might be employed as a text-book for classes and individual students in the department of teacher-training. It has been the aim of the author not to alter the work so mate rially as to render it unfitting for the general reader; and with this in View the series of blackboard out lines for the teacher, and the questions for the testing of the student's knowledge, have been placed at the end of the book. In the hope that both the reader and the student may receive profit from these pages the book is committed to the public. Excerpt from Making the Old Sunday School New All adults to-day who attended Sunday school when they were children, and still continue, are aware of a great change in Sunday school conceptions and convictions. Then a Sunday school was supposed to be almost entirely outside the realm of educational law: some miraculous power was supposed to be present and active because it was God's school; the very fact that God's Word was studied, and songs of Zion sung, and fervent prayers offered, was considered sufficient guarantee against failure: its high purpose would justify and sanctify any means whatsoever. Excerpt from The Sunday School Problem Our Sunday Schools are a national institution. They have been an organised, effective branch of our educational system for over a century, and have played an important part - greater than is generally realised - in the uplifting Of the people. Yet, notwithstanding the great strides education has made, and the adoption Of reformed and more scientific methods Of instruction in our Day Schools, the Sunday School has, generally speaking, advanced very little from its early type. The Sunday School is with us: the question is, are we to keep it If so, then we must reform it. This little book has been penned in the hope of drawing the attention of the reader to the existence of a Sunday School Problem, and to promote in some measure Sunday School reform. We must first realise that our Sunday Schools are lagging behind educationally. Then we must find the causes for this, and, finally, endeavour to remove them. Housing The Sunday School Or A Practical Study Of Sunday School Buildings Classic Reprint written by Marion Lawrance and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-30 with Architecture categories.

Excerpt from Housing the Sunday School or a Practical Study of Sunday School Buildings This book is the outgrowth of a lecture delivered in February, 1908, before the faculty, students and friends of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky. No pretensions are made to architectural skill or accuracy. My purpose has been rather to produce a book of practical suggestions for practical people who are looking toward the practical housing of the Sunday school. Neither is there any claim that this particular field is adequately covered, a thing entirely impossible within the scope of a book like this. I indulge the hope, however, that my readers will find something by way of suggestion that may be valuable. I have had much help from various sources by the loan of drawings and electrotypes, and desire to express my hearty thanks for this valuable assistance. Especially do I wish to thank the architects whose names appear with the illustrations. My greatest debt of obligation, however, is to Mr. George W. Kramer, F. I. A. I, of New York City. Mr. Kramer continues the firm of architects with whom the "Akron Plan" of Sunday-school buildings originated. He has planned and built thousands of churches and Sunday-school buildings throughout the country. He has furnished the material and drawings for Chapters VIII, IX and X, and has, under my general direction, made the drawings with which to illustrate my Ideal Sunday School Building, presented herewith in Chapter XIII. Mr. Kramer is known as an Ecclesiological Architect, and I gladly make mention of him in this connection, not only because of his service to me in the preparation of this book, but because of his general efficiency in the line of his profession. Excerpt from The Origin and Expansion of the Sunday-School The Sunday-school: Its Origin, Mission, Methods, and Auxiliaries; this is the subject of a series of lectures which I am to deliver here at the invitation of the honored Faculty of Yale Divinity School. And, as preliminary to an intelligent discussion of the theme, it is important to arrive at a definition of the term "Sunday-school," as that term is to be understood and employed in this discussion. A Sunday-school is an agency of the Church, by which the Word of God is taught interlocutorily, or catechetically, to children and other learners clustered in groups or classes under separate teachers; all these groups or classes being associated under a common head.
