Community Building In The Online Classroom written by Dominique Moyse Steinberg and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-15 with Education categories.

This book offers theories, principles, and strategies for developing the online classroom as a deep and full learning community that students feel is truly about, by, and for them. To be immediately useful, it offers practical ideas for helping students to actively contribute to shaping classroom affairs toward relevance and meaning. However, in order to elevate the discussion beyond the “primer” level, the book anchors those ideas in social and educational principles and theories. As social learning theories posit, deep and full learning occurs when our full cognitive, emotional, and social selves are engaged. This book mitigates the challenges to such engagement in the virtual classroom, arguing that a strong sense of community ownership will enhance students’ ability to successfully master content. Although not all strategies are group based, the use of groups both large and small is a primary way of helping online students to become active on their own behalf in building a learning community that meets their needs. Strategies outlined here focus primarily on promoting shared authority, visibility, and voice and on encouraging student disclosure of needs and peer connection.

The research question addressed in this project was, how do experienced teachers build classroom community? It documents the experiences of five experienced teachers as they describe in their own words how they think they build a successful learning community. The project utilizes the work of Noddings as a base for what community is. Also cited are Schaps, Lewis & Watson who have studied classroom community formation and academic advantages of classroom community. Five teachers were interviewed. The teachers must have taught for over five years. The teachers were selected across age levels having experience teaching preschool through high school age level. The community building themes that emerged in the interviews as having positive impact on classroom community formation were: trust, sharing, preparation and routine, school community, parents, using a roadblock, passing the torch, adjusting to age.

Purpose. The purpose of this inquiry was to examine the concept of classroom community from teachers' perspectives. Procedures. In this qualitative inquiry purposive selection was used to identify four elementary practitioners who purposefully created classroom learning communities. A series of three phenomenologically-based, in-depth individual interviews provided the main source of data. Findings. Four individual participant profiles were crafted from verbatim transcripts and specific strategies used by the teachers were described along with indicators of their effectiveness and influencing factors. The individual profiles of the four teachers demonstrated unique emphases as well as commonalities in their approaches to creating classroom community. Final analysis of the in-depth interviews led to an integrated, synergistic view of classroom community. Six characteristics emerged as vital elements: common goals, shared ownership, open communication, caring relationships, security, and sense of belonging. Two underlying, pervasive themes were also identified: respect and responsibility. The inquiry further revealed that classroom communities whose foundations are rooted in respect and responsibility are learning-centered rather than student-centered or teacher-centered. Ultimately, the investigation demonstrated that the purposeful actions of individual teachers are essential to the creation of successful learning communities.
