Construction is the means by which designing architects and engineers transform a design idea into built reality. It is from this perspective that the subject of 'building construction design' is dealt with by the architect José Luis Moro in three comprehensive volumes. Each is dedicated to the methodological, physical and functional fundamentals, the conception of a constructional solution, and finally its implementation in the constructional detail. Not only do the three volumes provide extensive content; they also ensure the greatest possible clarity in the text and graphics, in order to make it easier for learners to access the material. Importantly, they focus not only on conveying technical and scientific information, but also on demonstrating the complex relationships and interactions between design, material and construction. Great importance was attached to developing consistent, overarching and meaningful correlations between the numerous and highly diverse topics covered. After an introduction to planning theory topics, Volume 1 ("Fundamentals") addresses sustainability issues in the context of constructional design. This is followed by a discussion of the most important material-related considerations and their consequences for the constructional application of the materials. The range of currently available industrial building products is also presented. Furthermore, the essential requirements and functions that building structures must fulfill from a structural, building physics, building acoustics and fire protection perspective are examined. In closing, the book considers questions of durability.

Why are buildings detailed the way they are? Why do architects and engineers seem to come to the same kind of solutions to their detailing problems? Are we satisfied with such a situation? With environmental concerns so high on designers' agendas, the answer to this third question has to be 'no'. Collectively architects, engineers and specifiers need to revisit how they detail the built environment, and address the most important and potentially difficult area of the joint between materials and components. In Principles of Architectural Detailing the authors question the way in which buildings are detailed and in particular challenge familiar joint solutions. They offer practical guidance and a number of tools to help the student of architectural detailing in the decision-making process. The emphasis throughout is on using knowledge of construction in a creative and productive way to contribute towards a built environment that enhances our well-being and which is also sustainable.

How Buildings Work written by Edward Allen and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-01 with Architecture categories.

Illustrated with hundreds of illuminating line drawings, this classic guide reveals virtually every secret of a building's function: how it stands up, keeps its occupants safe and comfortable, gets built, grows old, and dies--and why some buildings do this so much better than others. Drawing on things he's learned from the many buildings he himself designed (and in some cases built with his own hands), Edward Allen explains complex phenomena such as the role of the sun in heating buildings and the range of structural devices that are used for support, from trusses and bearing walls to post-tensioned concrete beams and corbeled vaults. He stresses the importance of intelligent design in dealing with such problems as overheating and overcooling, excessive energy use, leaky roofs and windows, fire safety, and noisy interiors. He serves up some surprises: thermal insulation is generally a better investment than solar collectors; board fences are not effective noise barriers; there's one type of window that can be left open during a rainstorm. The new edition emphasizes "green" architecture and eco-conscious design and construction. It features a prologue on sustainable construction, and includes new information on topics such as the collapse of the World Trade Center, sick building syndrome, and EIFS failures and how they could have been prevented. Allen also highlights the array of amazing new building materials now available, such as self-cleaning glass, photovoltaics, transparent ceramics, cloud gel, and super-high-strength concrete and structural fibers. Edward Allen makes it easy for everyone--from armchair architects and sidewalk superintendents to students of architecture and construction--to understand the mysteries and complexities of even the largest building, from how it recycles waste and controls the movement of air, to how it is kept alive and growing.

The industry-standard guide to designing well-performing buildings Aesthetics are a vital part of good design. Great design emerges from a deep understanding of the functionality and constructability of details. Good details provide clear, complete, and correct information to the wide variety of users that need them. Architects guide a project from design idea to buildable reality by working with other building industry professionals and creating a set of details that show how things are put together. Architectural Detailing systematically describes the principles for designing good architectural details. Using patterns that demonstrate best practices and consistent approaches to design detailing, this book teaches why detailing is important, what factors shape detailing issues, and how to detail a building that meets or exceeds performance requirements. Extensive illustrations demonstrate how to design building details that will not leak water or air, will control the flow of heat and water vapor, will adjust to all kinds of movement, and will be easy to construct. This fourth edition has been updated to conform to the latest International Building Codes and International Energy Conservation Code requirements and incorporates current knowledge about new material and construction technology, including: Expanded patterns for sustainability, high performance architecture, and resilience Examples using panelized or modularized prefabricated building assemblies Complex case studies demonstrating the detailing design process for energy efficient structures Design detailing for maintenance and management of sensitive or weak spots in a building assembly Architectural Detailing helps you bring a building together with a well detailed design that communicates effectively at all levels of the construction process.

Construction is the means used by the designing architect and engineer to transform a design idea into built reality. From this perspective, the subject of 'building construction' is dealt with by architect José Luis Moro in four comprehensive volumes. They are each dedicated to the methodological, physical, and functional principles, the conception of a constructional basic solution, and finally its implementation in the constructional detail. Not only is a wide range of content covered, but the greatest possible clarity is also ensured in order to make it easier for students to access the subject matter. An important focus of the work lies not only on conveying technical and scientific factual information, but also on demonstrating complex relationships and interactions between design, material, and construction. Volume 2 deals with constructional aspects that influence the design of buildings and their components. This includes the assembly of building envelopes--large-format continuous surface elements--from individual components, taking into account different variants of flat and curved geometry and basic constructional design. As a further conceptually determining constructional criterion, primary supporting structures are dealt with in their most important elementary manifestations. In addition, established, predominantly material-related construction methods used in building practice are discussed.
