While engineering may typically be regarded as a more male-dominated industry, women can absolutely find success within the vastly technical, seemingly scientific, and often-contractual profession. Katherine Kehres is just one example of a wife, a mother, and an engineer who maintains overwhelming satisfaction for the life she has constructed. Her persistence can be credited for navigating what others might find intimidating, and she sometimes considers frustrating. Crafted with an aim to change the perceptions and misconceptions, Building the Life of a Woman Engineer is mostly a memoir, maybe a self-help, and hopefully an inspiration. A key purpose of its design is in bringing awareness to and acceptability for engineering, both as an educational pursuit and as a career field, for girls to strive toward and women to thrive in. Katherine details her growth, resilience, and dedication over the years, despite originally assuming that engineering was only for men, dads, and nerds! She accentuates how the occupation actually encompasses traits and values beyond the baseline affinity for math and science. And the insight and lessons provided function as guidance for those pondering whether they or a friend or a family member could also find engineering interesting and incredibly rewarding. No matter where anyone is within their own individual and unique journey, the reflections on personal and professional experiences are anticipated to help everyone be less naïve and more knowledgeable. Concurrently, big picture ideas serve as reassurance that all are in control of building their own life project, even when it is paved with challenges and obstacles. So whether you have a desire to one day find your own niche, you already hold a critical role, or you are simply a champion for the importance and essentiality of engineers, your encouragement and camaraderie are welcomed in the engineering community!

Scientists, engineers, and medical professionals play a vital role in building the 21st- century science and technology enterprises that will create solutions and jobs critical to solving the large, complex, and interdisciplinary problems faced by society: problems in energy, sustainability, the environment, water, food, disease, and healthcare. As a growing percentage of the scientific and technological workforce, women need to participate fully not just in finding solutions to technical problems, but also in building the organizations responsible for the job creation that will bring these solutions to market and to bear on pressing issues. To accomplish this, it is important that more women in science and engineering become entrepreneurs in order to start new companies; create business units inside established organizations, mature companies, and the government; and/or function as social entrepreneurs focused on societal issues. Entrepreneurship represents a vital source of change in all facets of society, empowering individuals to seek opportunity where others see insurmountable problems. From Science to Business: Preparing Female Scientists and Engineers for Successful Transitions into Entrepreneurship is the summary of an August 2009 workshop that assesses the current status of women undertaking entrepreneurial activity in technical fields, to better understand the nature of the barriers they encounter, and to identify what it takes for women scientists and engineers to succeed as entrepreneurs. This report focuses on women's career transitions from academic science and engineering to entrepreneurship, with a goal of identifying knowledge gaps in women's skills as well as experiences crucial to future success in business and critical for achieving leadership positions in entrepreneurial organizations. From Science to Business makes the case that in addition to educating women scientists and engineers in rigorous problem solving, it is equally important to provide exposure and training to impart the skills that will enable more women to move from the role of expert to that of leader in dynamic new business enterprises. This book will be of interest to professionals in both academia and industry, graduate and post-graduate students, and organizations that advocate for a stronger economy.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the world's largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology. 2015 marks the 65th anniversary of SWE and in honor of this exciting milestone, the Society created "We Built This: a Look at the Society of Women Engineers' First 65 years," a scrapbook of stories and images from the SWE archives. From the Foreword by Elizabeth Bierman, FY15 SWE President We set out hoping to boil down the sprawling SWE archives into one scrapbook that takes you on a journey through SWE's history. After all, there's something magical about reading through a scrapbook and having so many pieces of history, full of so many memories, laid out before you. That's the feeling we got when we opened the archives, and it's the feeling we wanted you to have when you open this book. Joy and heartache, triumph, tribulations and perseverance, grace and the kind of tenacity you could only find in the heart of a woman engineer-you'll find it all here. The history of our Society is more than a straightforward chronology of things that have happened. Our history is the result of the choices we've made, the small moments with friends we shared, our achievements and accomplishments. SWE's history is not something that merely happened; it's what we built for ourselves.
