Understanding the impact of workload and database characteristics on the performance of both DB2®, MQ, and the replication process is useful for achieving optimal performance.Although existing applications cannot generally be modified, this knowledge is essential for properly tuning MQ and Q Replication and for developing best practices for future application development and database design. It also helps with estimating performance objectives that take these considerations into account. Performance metrics, such as rows per second, are useful but imperfect. How large is a row? It is intuitively, and correctly, obvious that replicating small DB2 rows, such as 100 bytes long, takes fewer resources and is more efficient than replicating DB2 rows that are tens of thousand bytes long. Larger rows create more work in each component of the replication process. The more bytes there are to read from the DB2 log, makes more bytes to transmit over the network and to update in DB2 at the target. Now, how complex is the table definition? Does DB2 have to maintain several unique indexes each time a row is changed in that table? The same argument applies to transaction size: committing each row change to DB2 as opposed to committing, say, every 500 rows also means more work in each component along the replication process. This RedpaperTM reports results and lessons learned from performance testing at the IBM® laboratories, and it provides configuration and tuning recommendations for DB2, Q Replication, and MQ. As business cycles speed up, many customers gain significant competitive advantage from quicker and more accurate business decision-making by using real data. For many customers, choosing the path to co-locate their transactional and analytical workloads on System z® better leverages their existing investment in hardware, software, and skills. We created a project to address a number of best practice questions on how to manage these newer, analytical type workloads, especially when co-located with traditional transactional workloads. The goal of this IBM® Redbooks® publication is to provide technical guidance and performance trade-offs associated with resource management and potentially DB2® data-sharing in a variety of mixed transactional / data warehouse System z topologies. The term co-location used here and in the rest of the book is specifically defined as the practice of housing both transactional (OLTP) and data warehouse (analytical) workloads within the same System z configuration. We also assumed that key portions of the transactional and data warehouse databases would reside on DB2 for z/OS®. The databases may or may not reside in a DB2 data-sharing environment; we discuss those pros and cons in this book. The intended audience includes DB2 data warehouse architects and practitioners who are facing choices in resource management and system topologies in the data warehouse arena. This specifically includes Business Intelligence (BI) administrators, DB2 database administrators (DBAs) and z/OS performance administrators / systems programmers. Utilizing these products we created transactional (OLTP), data warehouse query, and data warehouse refresh workloads. All the workloads were based on an existing web-based transactional Bookstore workload, that's currently utilized for internal testing within the System p® and z labs. While some IBM Cognos BI and ISWz product usage and experiences information is covered in this book, we do not go into the depth typically found in IBM Redbooks publications, since there's another book focused specifically on that

In this IBM Redbooks publication we discuss primary processes and various alternatives that prepare you in implementing a DB2 near-realtime business intelligence environment. We used an IBM p-Series multiprocessor, along with a number of software products, including WebSphere MQ, DB2 MQ Listener, DB2 UDB, and DB2 Information Integrator - Replication Edition. We discuss ETL processing in a near-realtime environment, with reference to DB2 Warehouse Manager and DataStage from Ascential Software. We used WebSphere Studio Application Developer to generate online query applications, along with Java, SQL, and C-based stored procedures. We discuss DB2 Query Patroller and DB2 Governor. We provide guidelines and recommended best practices, and this book is what you need to get prepared to implement near-realtime business intelligence in your environment.
