De indruk bestaat dat het gebruik van buitenschoolse hulp de voorbije jaren is gestegen. Dat de buitenschoolse hulp zo’n groot ‘succes’ kent, lijkt moeilijk te rijmen met de inspanningen om het zorgaanbod op school te versterken. In opdracht van de Vlaamse overheid werd een grootschalig onderzoek opgezet met als doel de bestaande praktijken inzake buitenschoolse hulp in kaart te brengen. Niet alleen bestudeerden de onderzoekers de omvang en aard van de buitenschoolse hulp, ook de rol en motieven van centrale actoren – zoals ouders, zorgverantwoordelijken en CLB-medewerkers – in het besluitvormingsproces werden onder de loep genomen, evenals de communicatie en afstemming tussen de buitenschoolse hulp en de zorg op school. Ten slotte zochten de onderzoekers naar factoren die de verschillen in het gebruik van buitenschoolse hulp kunnen verklaren. Ze gingen het effect na van kenmerken van zorg op school en andere schoolkenmerken en onderzochten ook het effect van kind-, SES- en migratiegerelateerde kenmerken op het gebruik van buitenschoolse hulp. De reflecties aangaande de bevindingen uit deze studie kaderen de auteurs binnen drie centrale invalshoeken: (1) het model van geïntegreerde zorg op school en het idee van het zorg- of ondersteuningscontinuüm, (2) de beweging naar medicalisering van de hulpverlening en (3) het maatschappelijk perspectief van het in standhouden en vergroten van sociale ongelijkheid van onderwijskansen.
