Nirmana merupakan guratan atau coretan yang paling mendasar dari penataan unsur-unsur rupawi, seperti garis, bentuk, warna dan tekstur, menjadi sebuah kesatuan. Kata nirmana diambil dari kata nir- yang berarti tanpa atau tidak, dan mana artinya bentuk atau arti, sehingga secara harfiah nirmana bermakud sesuatu yang masih belum memiliki arti. Nirmana berkaitan dengan pengorganisasian atau penyusunan elemen-elemen visual seperti titik, garis, warna, ruang dan tekstur menjadi satu kesatuan yang harmonis. Nirmana dapat juga diartikan sebagai hasil imajinasi dalam rangkaian bentuk dwimatra dan (atau) trimatra yang harus mempunyai nilai keindahan. Nirmana juga terkait pada persepsi visual, pada dasarnya mempelajari mengenai elemen-elemen senirupa yang meliputi empat elemen dasar utama yakni titik, garis, bidang, dan pejal. Dengan mempelajari Nirmana dwimatra dan trimatra karya desain arsitektur akan lebih bervariatif dan lebih ekspresif dengan bentukan-bentukannya, sehingga menjadi rekomendasi desain yang akan diaplikasikan pada proyek nyata.

Sebaliknya karya desain 3 dimensi merupakan karya yang yang didalamnya terdapat panjang dan lebar dan memiliki ketebalan serta kedalaman. Dalam dasar desain diajarkan bagaimana membentuk desain dalam ke dua kategori ini sesuai dengan tata rupa dan kaidah dasar desain serta prinsip seni rupa.
