This book analyzes the civil war in Yemen and how intervening external actors have shaped the trajectory of the conflict. The work examines the conflict in Yemen as a testing ground for expectations about the autonomy and control of proxies by external patrons and the direct consequences for civilian victimization and duration of war. Like other proxy wars, the international dimensions of the war made the conflict in Yemen subject to the geopolitical interests of intervening powers. The longstanding power rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran over Middle East supremacy resulted in a competitive intervention in Yemen, where the initial belligerents of the civil war-the Houthi and the Hadi regime-were used as proxies by Tehran and the Gulf coalition led by Riyadh, respectively. Their intervention ultimately translated into a prolonged and destructive conflict. The often contradictory and self-interested patronage strategies by the coalition's two central patrons, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, undermined their broader goal of containing Iran. However, Iran's support for the Houthis enabled them to bait and bleed the Gulf coalition. Lastly, in an effort to balance against Iran, the United States underwrote the military campaign of the Gulf states with military hardware and personnel, thereby further prolonging the conflict and humanitarian disaster. This book concludes that intervention by external patrons both protracted the civil war and made it far more destructive for the civilian population. This book will be of much interest to students of proxy wars, Middle Eastern conflict, and security studies in general.

Wilayah ini tidak pernah surut dari berbagai jenis konflik, dengan faktor penyebab dan pemicu yang beragam. Ia tidak pernah sepi dari berbagai konflik internal dan antarnegara, yang terus membara sejak berakhirnya kolonialisme Barat. Pemicu konflik di Timur Tengah bisa berbeda, namun akar konflik bisa sama, jika ditelusuri dan diteliti kaitannya dengan berbagai persoalan politik, ideologi dan kepentingan geostrategis yang melibatkan banyak pihak, khususnya kekuatan-kekuatan luar. Konflik-konflik internal yang terjadi berkembang semakin buruk di berbagai negara di kawasan ini, dengan keterlibatan aktor luar yang kian mendalam dan beragam, sehingga situasi kawasan dipenuhi anarki dan semakin runyam prospeknya. Situasi darurat kompleks melahirkan krisis kemanusiaan yang hebat, dengan mengalirnya gelombang migrasi masif ke benua Eropa. Timur Tengah menjadi sumber sekaligus penyebar instabilitas ke berbagai penjuru dunia. Konflik-konflik dominan diwarnai pertentangan antara kelompok-kelompok agama dan etnik demi perebutan sumber daya alam dan penguasaan teritorial, yang tidak dapat dilepaskan dari sejarah kolonialisme di masa lalu dan juga respons dunia, terutama PBB, dan kekuatan-kekuatan kawasan dan global, dalam menyikapinya. Masa depan kawasan ini semakin runyam akibat aksi-aksi imperialisme dan pendudukan baru pasca-Perang Dunia II, termasuk yang dilakukan Israel dan didukung Barat pasca-invasi 1967. Timur Tengah, pusat lahirnya agama-agama besar yang memengaruhi dunia, selain kaya dengan sumber daya alam minyak dan gas bumi, yang menyediakan sebagian besar kebutuhan energi dunia, semakin memanas akibat eskalasi ketegangan yang sulit diturunkan karena kepentingan tumpang-tindih berbagai kelompok dan negara yang terlibat konflik di dalamnya. Friksi dan perpecahan kelompok-kelompok kekuatan domestik yang kian meluas, dan masuknya kekuatan besar lain, seperti Rusia, dan juga Turki, menambah kompleks persoalan yang muncul, sehingga upaya mencari resolusi konflik semakin sulit. Bukan tidak mungkin, akibat perkembangannya yang terus memanas dan mengalami eskalasi, perang besar yang bersifat mondial dapat muncul dari konflik yang lama dan baru yang ada di kawasan ini.
