Buku ini merupakan terjemahan dari kitab ulama asli Nusantara, Syaikh Nawawi al-Bantani. Judul aslinya adalah Kâsyifah as-Sajâ fî Syarh Safinah an-Najâ karya Syaikh Salim bin Sumair al-Hadhrami al-Batawi. Sebagai sebuah kitab fikih, tidak seperti kitab fikih pada umumnya seperti kitab Fath al-Qarib, Fath al-Mu‘in dan Fath al-Wahhab yang membahas perihal ibadah, mu‘amalah, kekeluargaan, dan pidana. Kitab Kâsyifah as-Sajâ hanya berisi penjelasan seputar fikih ibadah, yang meliputi enam bab, yakni taharah (bersuci), tanda baligh, salat, jenazah, zakat, puasa. Meskipun kitab Kâsyifah as-Sajâ merupakan kitab fikih, kitab ini juga berisi pembahasan akidah, yang terkait pondasi agama Islam, rukun dan kalimat tauhid. Hal ini nampaknya dapat dinilai sebagai kelebihan kitab ini, karena para pembaca dapat mengetahui inti dari permasalahan akidah dan fikih ibadah secara bersamaan. Sebagai kitab yang amat populer di Nusantara sekaligus penulisnya berasal dari Nusantara, kiranya tak berlebihan jika terjemahan dari kitab ini diberi judul Fikih Islam Nusantara, karena pada dasarnya fikih mazhab Syafi’i yang dianut dan diajarkan oleh Syaikh Nawawi dan Syaikh Salim bin Sumair al-Hadhrami al-Batawi sekaligus dianut oleh mayoritas umat Islam Nusantara sejak dahulu kala hingga kini.

Indonesian Islam is often portrayed as being intrinsically moderate by virtue of the role that mystical Sufism played in shaping its traditions. According to Western observers--from Dutch colonial administrators and orientalist scholars to modern anthropologists such as the late Clifford Geertz--Indonesia's peaceful interpretation of Islam has been perpetually under threat from outside by more violent, intolerant Islamic traditions that were originally imposed by conquering Arab armies. Michael Laffan traces how the popular image of Indonesian Islam was shaped by encounters between colonial Dutch scholars and reformist Islamic thinkers.
