Dealing With Disaster In Japan written by Christopher Hood and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Social Science categories.

Just as the sinking of the Titanic is embedded in the public consciousness in the English-speaking world, so the crash of JAL flight JL123 is part of the Japanese collective memory. The 1985 crash involved the largest loss of life for any single air crash in the world. 520 people, many of whom had been returning to their ancestral home for the Obon religious festival, were killed; there were only four survivors. This book tells the story of the crash, discusses the many controversial issues surrounding it, and considers why it has come to have such importance for many Japanese. It shows how the Japanese responded to the disaster: trying to comprehend how a faulty repair may have caused the crash, and the fact that rescue services took such a long time to reach the remote crash site; how the bereaved dealt with their loss; how the media in Japan and in the wider world reported the disaster; and how the disaster is remembered and commemorated. The book highlights the media coverage of anniversary events and the Japanese books and films about the crash; the very particular memorialization process in Japan, alongside Japanese attitudes to death and religion; it points out in what ways this crash both reflects typical Japanese behaviour and in what ways the crash is unique.

Gripping forensic tales explain how and why trains crash. Trains are massive—with some weighing 15,000 tons or more. When these metal monsters collide or go off the rails, their destructive power becomes clear. In this book, George Bibel presents riveting tales of trains gone wrong, the detective work of finding out why, and the safety improvements that were born of tragedy. Train Wreck details numerous crashes, including 17 in which more than 200 people were killed. Readers follow investigators as they sift through the rubble and work with computerized event recorders to figure out what happened. Using a mix of eyewitness accounts and scientific explanations, Bibel draws us into a world of forensics and human drama. Train Wreck is a fascinating exploration of • runaway trains • bearing failures • metal fatigue • crash testing • collision dynamics • bad rails

Understanding World Media Understanding World Media sets out to mirror world media and the freedom it enjoyed across the globe in about 200 countries. While media is an important part of academic research, concerns have been raised globally on its content, intent and freedom of expression. To the extent that even as per the data compiled by Reporters Without Borders, democratic India ranks below par at 138 in the World Press Freedom Index 2018 out of the 180 listed nations. Though, it is a question of debate and discussions to what extent media in India is considered free or under censorship. When India is emerging as a global power with over 55 percent of its population is under 35 years of age, interest in the world community and media is growing leaps and bounds. It is in this context that this book magnifies its mirror to bring facts about the status and understanding of media in the world. For any book like this, it will always have its challenges to cover subjects like media in a nutshell, but for today, this book is timely and relevant. It is a balanced and thoughtful effort to present such a comprehensive book in a crisp and concise manner, as it is difficult to get experts on various countries to write on their respective domains. We have put our utmost effort to consolidate all necessary information and analysis required for this collection and we are very hopeful that it will serve its purpose, fulfill the void and information gap about the world media. Understanding World Media is structured around two clear themes, the status of media in various countries and its freedom of expression. It is divided into five parts covering vast geographical areas in Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australia-Oceania.

Disaster Management In China In A Changing Era written by Yi Kang and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-03 with Political Science categories.

This book shows how Chinese officials have responded to popular and international pressure, while at the same time seeking to preserve their own careers, in the context of disaster management. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, it illustrates how authoritarian regimes are creating new governance mechanisms in response to the changing global environment and what challenges they are confronted with in the process. The book examines both the immediate and long-term effects of a major disaster on China’s policy, institutions, and governing practices, and seeks to explain which factors lead to hasty and poorly conceived reconstruction efforts, which in turn reproduce the very same conditions of vulnerability or expose communities to new risks. In short, it tells a “political” story of how intra-governmental interactions, state-society relations, and international engagement can shape the processes and outcomes of recovery and reconstruction.

The Blessings Of Disaster written by Michel Bruneau and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-08 with Nature categories.

Are we doomed? As individuals, certainly, eventually, inevitably. But as a species? As a civilization? Leading catastrophe engineer Michel Bruneau thinks perhaps not. The Blessings of Disaster draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines to illustrate how our civilization’s future successes and failures in dealing with societal threats—be they pandemics, climate change, overpopulation, monetary collapse, and nuclear holocaust—can be predicted by observing how we currently cope with and react to natural and technological disasters. Maybe most importantly, this entertaining and often counter-intuitive book shows how we can think in better ways about disasters, to strengthen and extend our existence as both individuals and as a species. When it comes to rare extreme events, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornados, volcanic eruptions, technological accidents, terrorist attacks, pandemics, and even existential threats, it is in our nature to set ourselves up for disasters because the gamble may be worth it. But only maybe. The Blessing of Disaster is the very real story of the relationship between humans and disasters – and it’s not a simple one. Bringing together his decades-long career spanning the globe as an earthquake and disaster engineer, detailed catastrophe case studies from extreme events like Japan’s Kobe earthquake and category 5 hurricanes in the American South, along with thoughtful and practical solutions, Bruneau provides a thorough examination of the structural challenges that face today’s (and tomorrow’s) world. How we cope with today’s threats is indicative of what the future holds. Contrary to popular forecasts, it is not all gloom and doom – but some of it definitely is.
