This has been a sad year for our Society. The hand of Death has been active in taking from us some of our most valued members. Elsewhere a list of those who have left us will be read; and you will then be asked to rise and pay a tribute of respectful silence to their memory. But I can not and would not avoid saying a few words about three of our Directors who have passed to their reward. In January, the death of Mr. Jonas Bergner left his colleagues on the Board of Directors stunned at a loss which can never be adequately filled. In point of service he was the senior member of the Board. No words of mine can do justice to his profound learning, or to his generosity in sharing his knowledge with all who asked his help and counsel. In all New England there was nobody who knew so well the old houses, and their methods of construction, and he was consulted as an authority far and wide. What he knew of New-port was inexhaustible, and he was without a peer among us. He had the modesty and sterling manli ness of the true scholar, and a fine courtesy that endeared him to all who knew him. We mourn his loss, and he will never be forgotten by those who knew him and had the priceless gift of his friendship. Your Directors took a painful pleasure in attending his funeral, and Resolutions were adopted by them, and by the members at their Feb ruary meeting, testifying to the affection in which he was held.
