Excerpt from Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories of Denison University, 1905-1907, Vol. 13 He started the firs-t volume of the Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories the year following his coming to Denison. Whether looked at from the point of View of the probability of getting suitable financial support, of the small number and imperfect training of the students and other local workers who might be expected to furnish articles for it, or whether considered with reference to the likelihood of its receiving recognition abroad in the shape of exchanges with the really worthy scientific periodi cals of this and foreign countries - viewed from any of these standpoints the enterprise seemed to many a hazardous one. But how has it turned out? The trustees of the University voted a sum of money to help publish the first volume and have continued to do the same year after year for now nearly twenty years. Sometimes when they did not see how they could do so, with the many pressing financial needs, some of their number have put their hands into their own pockets and extracted therefrom what was necessary to prevent any interruption or delay in the appearance of a publication, which they have come to recognize as of great value to the University. With regard to the ques tion of finding contributors, examination of its index shows that twelve volumes have been issued, aggregating nearly pages of valuable scientific material. In the first ten volumes (complete indices of the last two are not just now at my disposal), I find that there are 85 articles written by many different authors, most of them Denison men, students or faculty members, and not a few of them those who have become original workers mainly through the influence and example of Professor Herrick him self. The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.

Syndromes Of Corruption written by Michael Johnston and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-01 with Political Science categories.

Corruption is a threat to democracy and economic development in many societies. It arises in the ways people pursue, use and exchange wealth and power, and in the strength or weakness of the state, political and social institutions that sustain and restrain those processes. Differences in these factors, Michael Johnston argues, give rise to four major syndromes of corruption: Influence Markets, Elite Cartels, Oligarchs and Clans, and Official Moguls. In this 2005 book, Johnston uses statistical measures to identify societies in each group, and case studies to show that the expected syndromes do arise. Countries studied include the United States, Japan and Germany (Influence Markets); Italy, Korea and Botswana (Elite Cartels); Russia, the Philippines and Mexico (Oligarchs and Clans); and China, Kenya, and Indonesia (Offical Moguls). A concluding chapter explores reform, emphasising the ways familiar measures should be applied - or withheld, lest they do harm - with an emphasis upon the value of 'deep democratisation'.

"Fabulous Fossils is a timely and significant contribution to the history of science and evolutionary paleontology. It details humanity's interest and developing understanding of trilobites from the recovery of these fossils at 15,000 year-old Paleolithic sites, to the 18th century appreciation that they were arthropod fossils. This volume elaborates on the development of modern trilobite research in Australia and a number of American, European, and Asian countries"--Publisher's description.

Essential Readings In Biosemiotics written by Donald Favareau and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-10 with Science categories.

Synthesizing the findings from a wide range of disciplines – from biology and anthropology to philosophy and linguistics – the emerging field of Biosemiotics explores the highly complex phenomenon of sign processing in living systems. Seeking to advance a naturalistic understanding of the evolution and development of sign-dependent life processes, contemporary biosemiotic theory offers important new conceptual tools for the scientific understanding of mind and meaning, for the development of artificial intelligence, and for the ongoing research into the rich diversity of non-verbal human, animal and biological communication processes. Donald Favareau’s Essential Readings in Biosemiotics has been designed as a single-source overview of the major works informing this new interdiscipline, and provides scholarly historical and analytical commentary on each of the texts presented. The first of its kind, this book constitutes a valuable resource to both bioscientists and to semioticians interested in this emerging new discipline, and can function as a primary textbook for students in biosemiotics, as well. Moreover, because of its inherently interdisciplinary nature and its focus on the ‘big questions’ of cognition, meaning and evolutionary biology, this volume should be of interest to anyone working in the fields of cognitive science, theoretical biology, philosophy of mind, evolutionary psychology, communication studies or the history and philosophy of science.
