This imaginative new fantasy will charm fans of the Ranger’s Apprentice and Rick Riordan. Denizen Hardwick is an orphan, and his life is, well, normal. Sure, in storybooks orphans are rescued from drudgery when they discover they are a wizard or a warrior or a prophesized king. But this is real life—orphans are just kids without parents. At least that’s what Denizen thought. . . . On a particularly dark night, the gates of Crosscaper Orphanage open to a car that almost growls with power. The car and the man in it retrieve Denizen with the promise of introducing him to a long-lost aunt. But on the ride into the city, they are attacked. Denizen soon learns that monsters can grow out of the shadows. And there is an ancient order of knights who keep them at bay. Denizen has a unique connection to these knights, but everything they tell him feels like a half-truth. If Denizen joins the order, is he fulfilling his destiny, or turning his back on everything his family did to keep him alive?

The groundbreaking #1 national bestseller from Barbara Coloroso, one of the world's most trusted parenting educators. First published over a decade ago, The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander quickly became the definitive guide to bullying prevention and intervention, providing real solutions for a problem that affects young people all over the world. Now, in this thoroughly updated and expanded book, Coloroso helps you recognize the characteristic triad of bullying: the bully who perpetrates the harm; the bullied, who is the target (and who may become a bully); and the not-so-innocent bystanders—peers or siblings who either watch, participate in the bullying or look away, and adults who see bullying as “teasing,” not tormenting, and as “boys will be boys” or as “ girl drama,” not the predatory aggression that it is. In this book you will learn: What bullying is and what it isn’t The four ways and three means of bullying Technology resources and solutions to deal effectively with both online and offline bullying Differences and similarities between boys and girls who bully Differences between telling and tattling, reporting and ratting; teasing and taunting; flirting and sexual bullying How to read the subtle cues and clues that a young person is being bullied What not to do and what you can do to help the one who is bullied Seven steps to hold accountable and reform someone who bullies Four abilities that protect young people from succumbing to a bully Why zero-tolerance policies can equal zero thinking Why contempt, not anger, drives bullying, and how to confront this in bullies—and in our culture How young people can become a potent force as active witnesses—standing up for their peers, speaking out against cruelty and taking responsibility for what happens among themselves Drawing on her decades of work with troubled youth and her wide experience with conflict resolution and restorative justice, Barbara Coloroso offers practical and compassionate solutions and gives parents, caregivers, educators and—most of all—young people the tools to break this cycle of violence.

Bullying has long been tolerated as a rite of passage among children and adolescents. There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Boys who don't play sports are often the targets of bullying, but a boy's worst bully may be the one he can't see: society's expectations about how he should act, how he should relate, and how he should play. Overlooked by a society that reinforces impossible standards of "masculinity," boys who are uninterested in competitive sports or have non-aggressive personalities are often vilified and bullied for being different as they grow up in the shadow of America's obsession with bigger, faster, richer, and stronger. Through a fascinating assortment of in-depth interviews, clinical case studies, and examples from popular literature, Dr. Janet Sasson Edgette and Beth Margolis Rupp illustrate how these boys are relegated to a second-class social status simply because they can't make a free throw or because they can spell better than they can run. Compassionate, empowering, and instructive, The Last Boys Picked will help parents, teachers, coaches, and caregivers identify the social and emotional hurdles that these boys face. It offers specific action steps to help any child build resilience and a healthy self-esteem-and tips for talking to them about their experiences and teaching them to face the schoolyard-and the world-with confidence.

'Extremely useful background reading for pre- and in service teachers especially, but not only, of pre-adults.' -The Teacher Trainer 'There are no muddled thoughts or fudging of issues here; Rigby deals head on with difficult issues, and the book has a nice literary style that is a pleasure to read - an ambitious and creditable achievement, with many excellent sections that break new ground while remaining equally accessible to practitioners and researchers.' - Educational Research 'This book is written in a lively style, and is comprehensive.' - Professional Social Work 'Ken Rigby's important book, New Perspectives on Bullying, is a useful drawing together of a range of research on bullying and should prove a good general reference point.' - Cambridge Journal of Education 'Anyone developing a policy on dealing with bullying should read this book.' - Prime Focus 'Rigby's book is a fantastic reference source for anyone who is at all concerned with, or interested in, the issue of bullying. It could well serve as a springboard for a multitude of research projects. At the very least, the book will provide you with a summary of the very latest research on the subject.' - Prime Focus 'Written by Ken Rigby, this draws on the author's extensive research to examine how bullying is being understood in different societies and offers critical appraisal of the suggested ways of tackling it. The author defines bullying as the systematic abuse of power, therefore making it a vital issue for society at large - not just schools but the workplace, prison and the home.' - Young People Now Magazine 'This book is an attempt to descibe how the problem of bullying has been, and is being, conceptualised and understood; to explain what researchers and educators (and others) are saying about why there is so much bullying going on; and to examine what solutions are being canvassed... Bullying is a phenomenon one can literally find everywhere. It is time that our perspective on bullying extended further afield. In a way, this book is a testing of the water. It is the first book that has attempted to examine bullying comprehensively. If I am right in thinking that an examination of bullying as "the systematic abuse of power" is an issue that is of vital importance to society at large, then it should indeed be useful to consider bullying in a wide range of contexts: not only in schools, the workplace and prisons, but also and especially in the home, long the preserve of students of domestic violence.' - Ken Rigby, from the Preface This book takes as its subject matter bullying behaviour in a wide range of settings, including kindergartens, schools, the workplace, in sports and prisons. Examining bullying in each of these areas, it discusses alternative views and perspectives on bullying, helping policy makers and professionals to coordinate their work and so tackle the problem effectively. Dr Ken Rigby draws upon his extensive research into bullying in different countries, societies and social contexts and considers many aspects of victimisation within this broad perspective, including: * the defining characteristics of bullying * the harm that bullying does * the role of gender, race and culture * children's and adult's attitudes to, and perceptions of bullying * current views on methods of prevention and intervention This multi-faceted exploration will help to deepen understanding of bullying in its many manifestations. It also provides practical and critical discussion of suggested ways of tackling bullying for professionals dealing with it in their field, providing valuable guidance in combating an ever-present problem.

Maiden Voyage is Denton Welch's debut novel, a frankly autobiographical account of a short period in his life when - at the age of 16 - he ran away from his English boarding school, before being sent back to Shanghai to live with his businessman father. "Trembling with sex", is how Alan Bennett wonderfully describes Maiden Voyage; and as well as portraying so acutely the passions and nameless longings of a teenage boy, and the strange quirks and brutalities of public school life, it is also a novel that deals with the agony of childhood bereavement - the suffering of a boy who has only recently lost his mother. When Maiden Voyage was first published in 1943 it was an overnight sensation, and so graphic in its depiction of adolescence and the schooling system that Welch's publisher - Herbert Read - was forced to seek legal advice. Seventy years on, there is little to shock the modern reader - but more than enough to earn a new generation of fans and admirers. William Burroughs said, "If ever there was a writer who was neglected, it was Denton. He makes you aware of the magic that is right beneath your eyes."

Lil Joshua and Lil Mohammed: Stop the Bullying Now! is a call to arms for every man, woman, and child to confront bullies wherever they find them. As a result of bullying and excessive teasing, our children are killing themselves, and they are often targets of physical attacks. Even though teasing may be tolerated to a certain extent, any type of physical abuse can’t be tolerated. Lil Joshua and Lil Mohammed let children know that being different doesn’t make you weird, but unique, and if everyone was the same, this world would be a very boring place. What the boys stress more than anything is bullying must be reported immediately to any and every adult who will listen, especially parents. The bullied child is not the only person who has a responsibility to report incidents of bullying. Anyone who witnesses bullying has a duty to report this deplorable behavior; if they don’t report incidents of bullying, they are just as guilty as the bullies themselves. Most bullying occurs at school; therefore, we are obligated to help Lil Joshua and Lil Mohammed spread the word that every child has a right to feel safe and secure at school. Every school in the world should be a No Bullying Zone.
