What's in name? Well, a lot if you're Faith whose first year of middle school is going to test just how much faith, courage, and determination she has. The halls of Alexandria Academy are going to bring some of the greatest tests, lessons, and experiences that will not only change Faith, but those around her. Gabrielle Walker's "norm" was turned upside down when a sudden move transported her to Alexandria Academy as the new school counselor. Perfect job, but far from the world and home she loved and longed for. Initially not seeing how she can be of use in her new post, Mrs. Walker soon learns that she is definitely in the right place at the appointed time. Once their paths cross, these two forces cause a ripple effect that impacts the students, faculty, and families connected by Alexandria Academy. A bully is a foe to us all, but there is a way to stomp out the noise.

The mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It can be the center of miracles, or of madness. It can be a place of truth, or a place of lies; it can be an environment of peaceful contemplation, or of desperate painful isolation. The choice is ours to make. No one else is thinking in our heads. As one classic horror movie proclaims, The calls are coming from inside the house! With all the talk in the world about bullying, the one thing that is rarely considered is that the most vicious monster, the most insidious bully, who is out to terrorize, torment us and steal our joy, is not so much out there in the schools or the workplace or the neighborhood. The bully we cannot seem to escape from is the one living inside our own heads. In Starve a Bully, Feed a Champion, Jacob Glass and his spirit guides take the reader through a gentle 101 day spiritual boot camp to guide the mind away from the tormenting thoughts of the ego and toward the peaceful, joyous and loving thoughts which lead to freedom and peace of mind. Based on the principles of A Course in Miracles and other New Thought teachings, the goal of this boot camp is the attainment of inner peace under any and all circumstances. You were not meant to merely survive, but to thrive!

It's not just the bully in the schoolyard that we should be worried about. The one-on-one bullying that dominates the national conversation, this timely book suggests, is actually part of a larger problem—a natural outcome of the bullying nature of our national institutions. And as long as the United States embraces militarism and aggressive capitalism, systemic bullying and all its impacts—at home and abroad—will persist as a major crisis. Bullying looks very similar on the personal and institutional levels: it involves an imbalance of power and behavior that consistently undermines its victim, securing compliance and submission and reinforcing the bully's sense of superiority and legitimacy. The similarity, this book tells us, is not a coincidence. Applying the concept of the “sociological imagination,” which links private problems and public issues, authors Charles Derber and Yale Magrass argue that individual bullying is an outgrowth—and a necessary function—of a larger social phenomenon. Bullying is seen here as a structural problem arising from systems organized around steep power hierarchies—from the halls of the Pentagon, Congress, and corporate offices to classrooms and playing fields and the environment. Dominant people and institutions need to create a culture in which violence and aggression are seen as natural and just: one where individuals compete over who will be bully or victim, and each is seen as deserving their fate within this hierarchy. The larger the inequalities of power in society, or among nations, or even across species, the more likely it is that both institutional and personal bullying will become commonplace. The authors see the life-long psychological scars interpersonal bullying can bring, but believe it is almost impossible to reduce such bullying without first challenging the institutions that breed and encourage it. In the United States a system of intertwined corporations, governments, and military institutions carries out “systemic bullying” to create profits and sustain its own power. While acknowledging the diversity and savagery of many other bully nations, the authors contend that America, as the most powerful nation in the world—and one that aggressively promotes its system as a model—merits special attention. It is only by recognizing the bullying built into this model that we can address the real problem, and in this, Bully Nation makes a hopeful beginning.

This important text presents bullying as a health issue and proposes effective strategies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention based on current scientific research of aggressive behaviors. Bullying goes far beyond typical treatments of the topic by presenting an overview of the research concerning the causes, symptoms, and prevalence of bullying to illustrate how it is not simply a social issue but both a genuine medical and health issue. The author draws upon both clinical data and her own extensive experience observing children's interactions on school playgrounds and from interviewing parents, teachers, administrators, and children themselves to reach conclusions about evidence-based prevention and treatment. The work provides a deeper understanding of bullying by presenting biological and psychological theories of aggression, describing why bystanders who witness bullying react in the way that they do, offering novel ways to deal with the problem, and presenting proven methods that concerned bystanders of all ages can employ to break bullying behaviors—without increasing their own risk. It provides information of great relevance to students, parents, counselors, educators, teaching assistants, and administrators.

Karen Kellock On Mental Illness and the Hero's Path: SEASON OF TREASON: Every fairy tale, myth or story of victory starts with overcoming evil or sinning. It is a season, tho' a wretched one--but also a season of favor and remuneration later on. In my season of treason all were against me just like Job see. The people I met/things I experienced were atrocious but in fearful denial I feigned acceptance. It was a land without justice nor lines. It was utter nonsensical emptiness and I was terrified. It was evil powers with a downed hedge, but things always even out in the end. Remember that and it'll all turn around friend. The Creative Act is a literal structure in nature. It seeds, germinates, and blossoms to full potential. All it takes is a creative discoverer to put it all together. Cover by Ayyaz Khan, Inside page KK portrait by Manuel Bagier.
