Das Buch beschreibt eine Reise des Autors mit seinem Freund Harris (einer für das Buch geschaffenen Figur, die auf seinem engsten Freund Joseph Twichell basiert) durch Mittel- und Südeuropa. Obwohl das erklärte Ziel der Reise darin besteht, den größten Teil des Weges zu Fuß zurückzulegen, benutzen die Männer auf ihrem Weg durch den Kontinent auch andere Verkehrsmittel. Das Buch ist das vierte von Mark Twains sechs Reisebüchern, die er zu seinen Lebzeiten veröffentlichte, und wird oft als inoffizielle Fortsetzung des ersten Buches, The Innocents Abroad (1869), angesehen. Auf ihrem Weg durch Deutschland, die Alpen und Italien begegnen die beiden Männer Situationen, die durch ihre Reaktionen auf sie noch humorvoller werden. Der Erzähler spielt die Rolle des amerikanischen Touristen der damaligen Zeit, der glaubt, alles zu verstehen, was er sieht, aber in Wirklichkeit nichts davon versteht. Die erste Hälfte des Buches behandelt den Aufenthalt der beiden in Südwestdeutschland (Heidelberg, Mannheim, eine Fahrt auf dem Neckar, Baden-Baden und der Schwarzwald). Der zweite Teil beschreibt seine Reisen durch die Schweiz und Ostfrankreich (Luzern, Interlaken, Zermatt, Chamonix und Genf). Das Ende des Buches behandelt seine Reise durch mehrere Städte in Norditalien (Mailand, Venedig und Rom). Mehrere andere Städte werden während ihrer Reise berührt und beschrieben, ebenso wie Berge wie das Matterhorn, die Jungfrau, die Rigi-Kulm und der Mont-Blanc. Zwischen den Erzählungen fügte Mark Twain Geschichten ein, die nichts mit der Reise zu tun hatten, wie Bluejay Yarn, The Man who put up at Gadsby's und andere, sowie viele deutsche Legenden, von denen einige vom Autor selbst erfunden wurden. Dem Buch sind sechs Anhänge beigefügt. Es handelt sich um kurze Aufsätze zu verschiedenen Themen.
