Gender Islam Nationalism And The State In Aceh written by Jaqueline Aquino Siapno and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-05 with Political Science categories.

This book sets out to open up the space for interpretation of history and politics in Aceh which is now in a state of armed rebellion against the Indonesian government. It lays out a groundwork for analysing how female agency is constituted in Aceh, in a complex interplay of indigenous matrifocality, Islamic belief and practices, state terror, and political violence. Analysts of the current conflict in Aceh have tended to focus on present events. Siapno provides a historical analysis of power, co-optation, and resistance in Aceh and links it to broader comparative studies of gender, Islam, and the state in Muslim communities throughout the world.

Scraps Of Hope In Banda Aceh written by Marjaana Jauhola and has been published by Helsinki University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-17 with Social Science categories.

Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh examines the rebuilding of the city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia in the aftermath of the celebrated Helsinki-based peace mediation process, thirty years of armed conflict, and the tsunami. Offering a critical contribution to the study of post-conflict politics, the book includes 14 documentary videos reflecting individuals’ experiences on rebuilding the city and following the everyday lives of people in Banda Aceh. Marjaana Jauhola mirrors the peace-making process from the perspective of the ‘outcast’ and invisible, challenging the selective narrative and ideals of the peace as a success story. Jauhola provides alternative ways to reflect the peace dialogue using ethnographic and film documentarist storytelling. Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh tells a story of layered exiles and displacement, revealing hidden narratives of violence and grief while exposing struggles over gendered expectations of being good and respectable women and men. It brings to light the multiple ways of arranging lives and forming caring relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home, and offers insights into the relations of power and violence that are embedded in the peace.

Accompanied by Turkey, his little 'hunting' dog, Derek Pugh founded several outstation schools in the most remote parts of Arnhem Land and gained a rare insight into a traditional way of life which has been witnessed by only a few outsiders. By turns reflective, tragic and hilarious, Turn Left at the Devil Tree is a memoir of a visiting teacher among the Indigenous people and wildlife of the Top End of Australia. It is also a history - revealing some little known and disturbing events that were sanctioned from the highest levels of government. Life there was "frustrating at times, but always a challenge and Derek has recorded his experiences beautifully in this delightful book". Ted Egan AO

The Ghaznavid And Seljuk Turks written by G.E. Tetley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-27 with History categories.

This new view on aspects of the Ghaznavid and Seljuk dynasties concentrates on the relationship of the panegyric poets Farrukhi Sistani (c.995-1032) and Mu'izzi (c.1045-1127) to the Ghaznavid and Seljuk rulers and dignitaries for whom they wrote. Dr Tetley investigates the reliability of the historical information which may be gathered from the poems, and draws comparisons with other historical sources. A solid and impressive work of learning, of interest to scholars in Oriental Studies, Medieval Literature, and History, The Ghaznavid and Seljuk Turks: Poetry as a Source for Iranian History, is the first extended English study of Mu'izzi it presents much new material concerning both this little-studied poet and also the better-known Farrukhi. Additionally, there is a valuable exploration of the relationship between Persians and Turks, a highly significant factor during the rule of the two dynasties.

"The year 2000 ... marks the sesquicentennial of California's statehood. California entered the Union on September 9, 1850--fewer than three years after the discovery of gold at Sutter's sawmill on January 24, 1848. Such a transformation in so short a span of time seems remarkable itself but not unanticipated, given the great interest shown by the English, French, Russians, and Americans during the 1830s and 1840s in exploiting Mexican California's abundant natural resources. Even before the discovery of gold, the Englishman Sir George Simpson wrote in 1847 that 'the English race, as I have already hinted, is doubtless destined to add this fair and fertile province to its possessions on this continent. ... The only doubt is, whether California is to fall to the British or the Americans.' Gold only hastened what some saw as inevitable. In contemplating California's fate, Simpson referred to what was 'destined' to happen. 'Manifest destiny' became the cliché of many American historians in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who saw the acquisition of California as both the logical and appropriate conclusion to the conquest of North America begun two centuries earlier by the first European colonists. The Huntington's exhibition Land of Golden Dreams takes a broader look at the impact of the Gold Rush on California, the nation, and the world. Like other contemporary historians, Peter Blodgett, curator of Western American historical manuscripts, examines the complete social fabric of California in the decade 1848-58 and its radical transformation, catalyzed by gold discovery, from 'a captured Mexican province to the thirty-first state of the American Union.' He notes that 'the events of the Gold Rush would remain a touchstone for generations of later Californians.' "--From Foreword, page 7.
