In the last twenty years scholarship on late antique and early medieval Ravenna has resulted in a certain number of publications mainly focused on the fields of architecture, mosaics and archaeology. On the contrary, much less attention has been paid on labour – both manual and intellectual – as well as the structure of production and objects derived from manufacturing activities, despite the fact that Ravenna is the place which preserves the highest number of historical evidence among all centres of the late Roman Mediterranean. Its cultural heritage is vast and composite, ranging from papyri to inscriptions, from ivories to marbles, as well as luxury objects, pottery, and coins. Starting from concrete typologies of hand-manufactured goods existing in the Ravennate milieu, the book aims at exploring the multifaceted traditions of late antique and early Byzantine handicraft from the fourth to the eighth century AD. Its perspective is to pay attention more on patronage, social taste, acculturation, workers and the economic industry of production which supported the demand, circulation and distribution of artefacts, than on the artistic evaluation of the objects themselves.

In this provocative book Éric Rebillard challenges many long-held assumptions about early Christian burial customs. For decades scholars of early Christianity have argued that the Church owned and operated burial grounds for Christians as early as the third century. Through a careful reading of primary sources including legal codes, theological works, epigraphical inscriptions, and sermons, Rebillard shows that there is little evidence to suggest that Christians occupied exclusive or isolated burial grounds in this early period. In fact, as late as the fourth and fifth centuries the Church did not impose on the faithful specific rituals for laying the dead to rest. In the preparation of Christians for burial, it was usually next of kin and not representatives of the Church who were responsible for what form of rite would be celebrated, and evidence from inscriptions and tombstones shows that for the most part Christians didn't separate themselves from non-Christians when burying their dead. According to Rebillard it would not be until the early Middle Ages that the Church gained control over burial practices and that "Christian cemeteries" became common. In this translation of Religion et Sépulture: L'église, les vivants et les morts dans l'Antiquité tardive, Rebillard fundamentally changes our understanding of early Christianity. The Care of the Dead in Late Antiquity will force scholars of the period to rethink their assumptions about early Christians as separate from their pagan contemporaries in daily life and ritual practice.

Today, a prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part, generally designed and assembled according to the individual’s appearance and functional needs with a view to being both as unobtrusive and as useful as possible. In classical antiquity, however, this was not necessarily the case. This volume examines the dynamism and complexity of religious expressions in rural settings across Late Antique Iberia. Chapters demonstrate that the rural world was a dynamic space which formed an integral part of the multi-directional process of religious exchange on the Iberian Peninsula in Late Antiquity, thus refuting the idea that rural spaces, and in turn rural religious practices, were static and unchanging, anchored in tradition and resistant to any process of religious change. The chapters present a series of case studies that examine phenomena such as the multi-locality of certain religious groups that moved periodically between the city and the countryside, the strategies that local agents used to shape religious expressions in rural areas (significantly marked by the permeability between the urban and rural worlds), the creation of religious landscapes as spaces imbued with cultural meanings by religious authorities that conceive the rural world as a place of refuge and spiritual experience, or the analysis of trans-local religious networks that connected rural and urban settings, facilitating the transmission of rituals and practices between these two spheres. Finally, both the introduction and the final chapter discuss the concept of “rural religion” and its applicability to the sphere of Late Antiquity. This volume provides a much-needed resource for students and scholars of religion in Late Antique Iberia, and in the post-Roman world more broadly, as well as anyone working on rural religion in the ancient, Late Antique and Medieval worlds.
