Un uomo, un luogo, un secolo: Burle Marx, il Sítio, il Novecento. Un documento e al tempo stesso una denuncia: questo è il libro di G. G. Rizzo, un lungo lavoro di ricerca, paziente e appassionata, condotta sempre su due piani: il primo legato alla vicenda personale di un'amicizia fra il protagonista e l'autore, e il secondo riferito allo studio svolto in modo sistematico e scientifico. Un metodo, non sempre consueto nel mondo dei libri sui giardini dove spesso l'inventiva e lo stupore tendono a prendere il sopravvento sull'analisi, appagandosi di gratificare il lato dell'immaginazione, la tavolozza dei colori e la pittoricità della descrizione per stabilire col lettore una complicità di cose non dette e, troppo spesso, non conosciute neppure da chi scrive. Rizzo ha affrontato coraggiosamente e senza esitazione la materia con assoluto rigore: riordinando le informazioni disponibili (e sono tante), verificandole nel tempo, analizzandole e, doverosamente, giudicandole. È l'applicazione di un metodo scientifico che non solo rende giustizia sia all'opera di Burle Marx e alla sua personalità, ma anche alla complessità e alla profondità della sua formazione. Così il Sítio è stato costruito nel tempo ed è vissuto della quotidianità delle attenzioni di Burle Marx (la sua visita mattutina e serale) e dei suoi collaboratori: ogni pianta, ogni fiore, ogni sasso ha una sua logica e una sua ragion d'essere. Nulla è casuale, tutto è armonico. E come in un giardino perfetto il pensiero, il lavoro, la natura e lo spirito si mescolano con il disegno, le tecniche e le leggende, che trasmettono l'anima delle piante e la loro relazione ancestrale (vorrei dire biblica) con gli uomini. Un luogo così esige rispetto, deve essere tramandato nella sua interezza fisica e spirituale. Mai i termini di integrità e di autenticità - riconosciuti nella convenzione del Patrimonio dell'Unesco e definiti dalla convenzione di Nara - hanno trovato più appropriata collocazione così come la dizione paesaggio vivente evolutivo, che riconosce i beni patrimonio dell'Umanità, può trovare campo di applicazione più coerente: per questo il problema della protezione del Sìtio merita i toni accorati e drammatici usati nel testo [Mariella Zoppi] Giulio G. Rizzo, architetto, è stato professore ordinario di prima fascia presso la Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze prima di Urbanistica e, successivamente, di Architettura del paesaggio. È stato direttore della Scuola di Dottorato di ricerca in Progettazione della città, del territorio e del paesaggio dell'Ateneo di Firenze, coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in Progettazione paesistica e coordinatore del Master in Paesaggistica del medesimo Ateneo.
