The authors conclude that, given the current, ongoing security challenges and the lack of job opportunities in Myanmar, voluntary repatriation is not yet feasible as a long-term solution. Since 1995, approx. 40,000 Burmese refugees have resettled in the U.S., fleeing the repressive military junta in Burma. In 2008 there was a review of allegations about mistreatment of Burmese refugees enroute to the U.S. -- specifically, that they were victims of extortion and human trafficking in Malaysia and Thailand.
