This exploratory study examined aspects of the social organization of the commercial wild morel industry in western Montana during 2001. We talked with 18 key informants (7 buyers and 11 pickers) and observed social interactions at one buying station near the Kootenai National Forest and three buying stations near the Bitterroot National Forest. The key informant and observational data permitted us to construct a picture of social interactions at field buying stations, buyer strategies for attracting pickers, changes in prices over the course of a season, and the ways in which various participants in the wild morel harvest construct their livelihoods. In the discussion, we contrast our findings with the results of a recently published study on nontimber forest product harvesters in the Eastern United States. We end the report with a discussion of management implications for managers and scientists.

Morels are prized edible mushrooms that fruit, sometimes prolifically, in many forest types throughout western North America. They are collected for personal consumption and commercially harvested as valuable special (nontimber) forest products. Large gaps remain, however, in our knowledge about their taxonomy, biology, ecology, cultivation, safety, and how to manage forests and harvesting activities to conserve morel populations and ensure sustainable crops. This publication provides forest managers, policymakers, mycologists, and mushroom harvesters with a synthesis of current knowledge regarding these issues, regional summaries of morel harvesting and management, and a comprehensive review of the literature.

The morels is one of the most delicious and costliest wild edible mushrooms of the world. During the last century significant advances have been made in the study of morel biology with the sole aim of artificial cultivation. But all efforts to domesticate them have not been wholly fruitful. The book is an attempt to compile all the relevant information on morel biology so that more interest in morel research is stimulated ultimately paving the way for cultivation. The monograph contains 14 chapters; each chapter is devoted to and provides original information and observations on various aspects of morel biology. It begins with an overview of morel biology followed by the life cycle pattern, classical and molecular systematic treatment, ecology, physiology, mycorrhizal and rhizomorphospheric relationships, nutritive and nutraceutical profile, observations and ethno-mycological and sociobiological impact, cytology of ascus development and the culinary aspects of morel consumption. The objective is to offer a detailed account of different aspects of morel biology and biodiversity. All the chapters are documented with tables, figures and original color photographs.

Ascomycete Fungi Of North America written by Michael Beug and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-01 with Science categories.

Approximately 75 percent of all fungi that have been described to date belong to the phylum Ascomycota. They are usually referred to as Ascomycetes and are commonly found and collected by mushroom enthusiasts. Ascomycetes exhibit a remarkable range of biodiversity, are beautiful and visually complex, and some, including morels and truffles, are highly prized for their edibility. Many play significant roles in plant ecology because of the mycorrhizal associations that they form. Thus it is remarkable that no book dedicated to describing and illustrating the North American Ascomycetes has been published in over sixty years. Filling the gap between technical publications and the limited representation of Ascomycetes in general mushroom field guides, Ascomycete Fungi of North America is a scientifically accurate work dedicated to this significant group of fungi. Because it is impossible to describe and illustrate the tens of thousands of species that occur in North America, the authors focus on species found in the continental United States and Canada that are large enough to be readily noticeable to mycologists, naturalists, photographers, and mushroom hunters. They provide 843 color photographs and more than 600 described species, many of which are illustrated in color for the first time. While emphasizing macroscopic field identification characteristics for a general audience, the authors also include microscopic and other advanced information useful to students and professional mycologists. In addition, a color key to the species described in this book offers a visual guide to assist in the identification process.

Fat Of The Land written by Langdon Cook and has been published by The Mountaineers Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-01 with Cooking categories.

Foraging is not just a throwback to our hunter-gatherer past; it's a way to reconnect with the landscape. And Langdon Cook is not just your typical grocery cart-toting dad. For him, gourmet delicacies abound, free for the taking if we just open our eyes. As a result, he finds himself free-diving in icy Puget Sound in hopes of spearing a snaggletooth lingcod, armed with nothing more than a "Hawaiian sling." He tempts fate by eating mushrooms that may or may not be poisonous. He strings up a fly rod to chase after sea-run trout. He even pulls on the gardening gloves to collect stinging nettles. In wry, detailed prose, he traces his journey from wrangler of pre-packaged calories to connoisseur of coveted wild edibles. Structured around the seasons of the year, each chapter focuses on a specific food type and concludes with a recipe featuring the author's hard-won bounty, a savory stop to each adventure-filled morsel.
