"As humans increasingly move into cities, as habitations encroach on flammable landscapes, and as climate change and invasive plants we have introduced alter those landscapes, we need more than ever an understanding of fire in the context of its role in the history of the planet. Is wildfire always a bad thing? to understand wildfire, Andrew Scott explains, we need to appreciate its history stretching back 400 million years. It was Scott who established the identity of fossil charcoal in rocks- our main clue to fires in the deep past. In this book he describes how we have in recent decades pieced together the story of fire through time. The record of fire on Earth tells us that fire has played a role in shaping the planet since vegetation spread on land. It also records evidence that wildfires increase at times of rapid climate change."--book jacket

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has been active in the United States officially since 1997, causing more than $45 million in damages to various entities. As the organization continues to grow and expand its range of targets, ELF has taken an extreme position against individuals, corporations, and governments that, in the organization's view, places monetary gain ahead of the natural environment. Rejecting state sanctioned means of legal protest, ELF uses economic sabotage to inflict financial suffering on those deemed objectionable. In February 2002, the FBI listed the ELF as the largest and most active US-based terrorist group. Although no one has died in any of these operations, ELF's campaign against loggers, SUV dealerships, and others it considers threats to the planet have galvanized and polarized the environmental movement. Former ELF spokesperson Rosebraugh charts the history and ideology of ELF and explores their tactics, successes, and limitations. He shows how ELFers offer an uncompromising vision of an earth under assault from the forces of greed and corporate violence, and how they employ direct action against those they deem a threat to the planet. Rosebraugh also examines the issues of whether violence is or is not justifiable, and the short- and long-term political benefits and drawbacks of using violence. Finally, he offers a trenchant vision of the future of the environmental movement, radical politics, and US democracy under the so-called Patriot Act. Whatever your view of direct action or violence, Burning Rage of a Dying Planet is essential reading for those trying to understand the mindset and motivations of contemporary radical environmentalists.

Spiritual Life on a Burning Planet draws on scientific research in developing religious perspectives on anthropogenic climate change. Its four chapters are entitled "Tolling Bells," "Burning Planet," "Eschatology in the Anthropocene," and "The Downward Passage." "Tolling Bells" introduces the topic of climate change and several of its emotional and biblical implications. "Burning Planet" provides an overview of the science of climate change and surveys the effects of global warming on human life later this century. The essays in "Eschatology in the Anthropocene" develop theological interpretations of climate change and examine its moral, spiritual, social, and psychological dimensions. "The Downward Passage" focuses on Christ's descent, the harrowing of hell, understood as a point of doctrine and an exemplary image of forthcoming challenges as we advance more deeply into the Anthropocene. A spiritual path suited to the Anthropocene is outlined. Its watchword is penthos, a traditional practice with sufficient power to convey a person through the grief and mourning that represent a true grasp of our having forced the earth into a new geological epoch.

The war started and ended in a day. The machines won. Now the fight for survival begins... E-Day: The moment the machines evolved and humans nearly went extinct. In the chaos, one million people escaped Earth and fled to a secret colony on the dark side of the Moon. Deep beneath the lunar surface, in the cold, they wait for the inevitable--a second attack that will wipe humanity out forever. Sergeant Tadhg Walsh is tired of waiting. He wants to fight back and return to Earth to search for Shadow Squad. But he has new orders from the Lunar Defense Corps: protect the colonies at all costs and forget about any survivors back home. Captain Akira Hayashi is one of those survivors, forced to heal from his injuries in a submarine while the planet burns. Shadow Squad won't be hiding for long, but before they can don their armor again, they must find a safe haven to plan their attack. When they locate a research station in the Mariana Trench, their submarine heads into the depths. What they find in the darkness changes everything they know about E-Day. On the Moon, the LDC will do everything in its power to keep the truth about survivors on Earth a secret, even if it means sacrificing the few for the many. On Earth, Shadow Squad will have to make tenuous alliances with old enemies to stand a chance against the enemy. If they can unite, they might just have a chance of stopping the machines from wiping out humanity on Earth and the Moon.

Back in PrintWorld Fire is the story of how fire and humans have coevolved. The two are inseparable, and together they have repeatedly remade the planet.“Pyne considers the evolution of fire in such diverse regions as Australia, Africa, Brazil, Sweden, Greece, Iberia, Russia, and India and then ponders Antarctica, the land without fire. As he examines changing techniques for and attitudes toward fire control, Pyne challenges our concepts of nature and wilderness and explains why the study and management of fire have tremendous environmental, cultural, and political implications.”—Booklist“A sweeping historical treatise that examines our world’s love/hate relationship with conflagration. His engrossing ideas leave bright embers in the memory.”—Outside

"A dazzling command of science and a relentless faith in people."--Naomi Klein "The most powerful treatise yet on the gravity of global warming. . . . I defy you to read this book and not feel motivated to change."--The Times (London) "If you care about the future of the planet, you should read Heat, and then give a copy to a friend."--Elizabeth Kolbert Today virtually none of us ask, "Is climate change actually happening?" Only one question is worth asking, "Can it be stopped?" George Monbiot thinks it can. And with Heat: How to Stop the Planet From Burning, he offers us a book that just might save our world. For the first time, Heat demonstrates that we can achieve the necessary cut--a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030--without bringing civilization to an end. Though writing with a "spirit of optimism," Monbiot does not pretend it will be easy. Our response will have to be immediate, and it will have to be decisive. With dazzling intellect and ample wit, Monbiot supports his proposals with a rigorous investigation into what works, what doesn't, how much it costs, and what the problems might be. And he is not afraid to attack anyone--friend or foe--whose claims are false or whose figures have been fudged. There is no time to waste, Monbiot observes, "We are the last generation that can make this happen, and this is the last possible moment at which we can make it happen." George Monbiot is one of the world's most influential thinkers. Nelson Mandela presented Monbiot with a United Nations Global 500 Award for outstanding environmental achievement. He is a weekly columnist for the Guardian.
