Conversely, a study of punctuation is a study Of language, of the balance and value of words and their relation to each other. The understanding of the ideas intended to be conveyed by the words used is the basis for good punctuation, for one cannot punctuate what he does not understand. Any one who has formed a habit of accurate reading, even if his reading has been somewhat limited, Should be able to punctuate fairly well. If, on the other hand, his reading has been Slip-shod, his punctuation is apt to partake of that characteristic. Excerpt from Modern Punctuation: A Book for Stenographers, Typewriter Operators and Business Men In this work it has been the aim of the author to treat the art of punctuation as a matter of common sense, good judgment, and taste. No specific laws or rules are laid down, but modern improved methods of punctuation are set forth in a simple and plain statement of facts, - easily understood and absorbed by the average mind. While it is true that the illustrative examples in this work are taken entirely from the terminology and phraseology of the business world, this fact in no way limits, but rather enhances, the general value and usefulness of work. The experienced teacher knows that a knowledge of rules and the ability to write clearly are often far apart in actual practice. No essen tial principle of syntax or punctuation has been omitted. Excerpt from Modern Business Correspondence: A Practical Treatise on the Writing of Business Letters Including Many Exercises in Word Study, Synonyms, Ad Writing, Punctuation, Etc More and more the fact is being recognized that among the chief qualifications of the successful business man is the ability to use plain, clear-cut, but withal graceful and effective English. Commercial English is simply Everyday English coupled with the technic of the office, store or factory. The average text-book is weak on the subject of Correspond ence, and the pupil is required to write letters about a great variety of matters which have no connection with each other, and which frequently concern things so far beyond the scope of his knowledge and experience that he can not comprehend the supposed situation. The result is that many times he makes no point in his letter, because he does not understand what he is writing about, uses a few worn-out phrases and makes several ludicrous errors. Ask the same pupil a few questions about some business or some line of work with which he is familiar and, omitting the Dear Sir and Yours truly, he may give you, orally, a fairly good business letter.
