How can a loving God also be a God of wrath? God's wrath stands out in the minds of many as the single most puzzling aspect of God's character. Often Christians who would like to reconcile divine love with divine wrath—while remaining faithful to the Bible—can't figure out how to do so. Kevin Kinghorn and Stephen Travis offer a way forward. Using a philosophically informed line of argument and a careful study of the relevant biblical texts, Kinghorn and Travis show how these two aspects of God's character can be reconciled. Often God's wrath is viewed as an expression of holiness or justice, with the implicit assumption that God's just response to people is incompatible with a loving response. The authors instead view God's love as a strictly essential divine attribute, with justice as a derivative of love. But What About God's Wrath? will appeal to Christians eager to engage this puzzle more deeply, more philosophically, and more biblically, beyond pat answers and devotional platitudes.

Romans 1:18 states, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men." When you read this, does it arouse fear or faith in you? I've heard it said that seventy-five percent of those who claim to be Christians became Christians because they were afraid of God's punishment. Is being afraid of God's punishment a good building block for faith? Is the gospel good news, bad news, or a combination of both? What does the Bible say about God's wrath? Is the Old Testament law the definitive word on God's wrath? If so, what do we do with the gospel (good news) of the New Testament? God's Wrath Is Good News gives the reader a new appreciation for God's holiness. Theology affirms that God set himself apart to redeem sinners. He did so because there was no other that could redeem them. Therefore, redemption is the epitome of a holy act. But if redemption is not God's primary focus and concern, then God's claim to holiness is put in doubt. It is the cross of Christ and God's provision of redemption that sets the revelation of God's wrath apart as being uniquely holy.

Late-modern theology is marked by persistent and widespread uncertainty as to how the wrath of God can be taken up as a legitimate theme within dogmatics. Rather than engage the most fundamental task of clarifying the inner logic by which God's identity is revealed in scripture, privilege has been ceded either to cultural and textual criticism, to ostensibly self-evident moral sensibilities, or to the thematization of religious experience. The present work sets out to rectify this misstep. The result is a rigorous proposal for understanding wrath expressly within the doctrine of God, as a redemptive mode of divine righteousness.

Is God loving? The Bible says that God is love; however, it also portrays a God that floods the earth, takes the lives of the firstborn in Egypt, and lashes out time and again in His fury. How can a God of love be synonymous with the God of fury displayed in the Old Testament? Are we fools? “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowled≥ fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Pro 1:7). Twice in the Proverbs we’re told that the beginning of knowledge and wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Is it possible that we have become altogether ignorant simply because we’ve tossed out the Bible’s basic teaching on God’s fury? The Fury of God penetrates the paradox and shows that we cannot truly understand God’s love until we fully understand His fury. If believers today are truly abiding in God’s Word, they will come face-to-face with the fury of God, and its truth will bring satisfaction to their souls. God’s people must know the truth. They longingly desire it. The truth is that our God is a consuming fire. He is a jealous God. He is a holy God. He is an unchanging God. He is a triune God. Our God is a God of fury. It is that God, the God of the Scriptures, whom I hope to resurrect in the hearts and minds of His people with this book.

Readers' Choice Award Winner "For God so loved the world . . ." We believe these words, but what do they really mean? Does God choose to love, or does God love necessarily? Is God's love emotional? Does the love of God include desire or enjoyment? Is God's love conditional? Can God receive love from human beings? Attempts to answer these questions have produced sharply divided pictures of God's relationship to the world. One widely held position is that of classical theism, which understands God as necessary, self-sufficient, perfect, simple, timeless, immutable and impassible. In this view, God is entirely unaffected by the world and his love is thus unconditional, unilateral and arbitrary. In the twentieth century, process theologians replaced classical theism with an understanding of God as bound up essentially with the world and dependent on it. In this view God necessarily feels all feelings and loves all others, because they are included within himself. In The Love of God, John Peckham offers a comprehensive canonical interpretation of divine love in dialogue with, and at times in contrast to, both classical and process theism. God's love, he argues, is freely willed, evaluative, emotional and reciprocal, given before but not without conditions. According to Peckham's reading of Scripture, the God who loves the world is both perfect and passible, both self-sufficient and desirous of reciprocal relationships with each person, so that "whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life."

We are at our human best when we give and forgive. But we live in a world in which it makes little sense to do either one. In our increasingly graceless culture, where can we find the motivation to give? And how do we learn to forgive when forgiving seems counterintuitive or even futile? A deeply personal yet profoundly thoughtful book, Free of Charge explores these questions--and the further questions to which they give rise--in light of God's generosity and Christ's sacrifice for us. Miroslav Volf draws from popular culture as well as from a wealth of literary and theological sources, weaving his rich reflections around the sturdy frame of Paul's vision of God's grace and Martin Luther's interpretation of that vision. Blending the best of theology and spirituality, he encourages us to echo in our own lives God's generous giving and forgiving. A fresh examination of two practices at the heart of the Christian faith--giving and forgiving--the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lenten study book for 2006 is at the same time an introduction to Christianity. Even more, it is a compelling invitation to Christian faith as a way of life. "Miroslav Volf, one of the most celebrated theologians of our day, offers us a unique interweaving of intense reflection, vivid and painfully personal stories and sheer celebration of the giving God . . . I cannot remember having read a better account of what it means to say that Jesus suffered for us in our place." -- Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

The title God's Wrath or God's Love? was originally used as the topic for a writing course that I happened to be taking during the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I decided to continue the topic because of the events which have crippled our lives throughout the first six months of 2020. The idea for the title had been important because of the horrendous effects of the hurricane and because of the content of the sermons of several ministers during the catastrophic events that occurred during the hurricane. As I am watching the response to the coronavirus, the multiple sickness and deaths, it has become overwhelming and deeply sad and despicable. The situation is again igniting my thinking on the subject of whether this can be "God's wrath." We must know that God's love is evident all around us. But I believe that it is certainly worth our time to consider that God needs to get our undivided attention in order for us to understand that we must make up our minds as to who we are called to be. We are God's prized possessions! He does love us, but it does not mean that His wrath will not be delivered when we fail to acknowledge Him. God's love is alive in my belief that He does exist, that everything about God is evident in our continued existence and in our surroundings. Throughout the Holy Bible, God inspired men of faith to tell us how much He loves us. I believe that God's wrath is only expelled when it becomes apparent that human beings have lost their zeal for righteousness and after multiple failures by man to recognize the love of God. 7

Without exception, this is the most revealing commentary of the book of Revelation in decades! This fresh and historically researched commentary reveals what early Christians had known so many years ago about the apocalypse. After 1,900 years, present-day Christians finally have a reliable document that explains Christ’s prophetic book. This commentary contains amazing insights. One of the main adversaries in the book of Revelation was a prominent historical figure. He was known as the savior of the church. People looked up to him and worshipped him. The apostle Paul called him the man of sin and the son of perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3). The apostle John, in one of his earlier writings, called him the Antichrist (1 John 2:18). Those who failed to get their names written in the Book of Life marveled at his presence in eternal punishment (Revelation 17:8). That person is identified by name in this commentary. Armageddon is more than a great battle in the book of Revelation. It is the one defining event that will affect everyone’s life. The number of combatants “is as the sand of the sea.” Yet the battle will be over before it ever begins (Revelation 20:8–9). The bowls of God’s wrath were poured out on a wicked and unsuspecting world. Historically, “a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshipped his image” (Revelation 16:2). This plague was described in detail by writers who lived as it occurred. This commentary includes their firsthand accounts. The Winepress of God’s Wrath depicts God’s anger at a wicked society while providing hope and comfort to believers. The theme in the book of Revelation is clear—the wicked will not escape destruction. Only obedient Christians will avoid the winepress of God’s wrath.

You cannot make it without God’s mercy. Do we just need God’s grace in dark and shameful moments? Are prayers for mercy only for those times when we really mess up? Jonathan Parnell says we need God’s mercy all the time. In fact, contrary to many church cultures, Parnell shows that asking God for mercy should be as regular as asking God for our daily bread. There’s no doubt that David was in a terrible predicament when he first prayed the words of Psalm 51. It was a dark and shameful moment in the Bible, and one so dark and shameful it seldom feels relevant to us today. But David’s most desperate prayer is really a prayer for all of us—and not just for our worst moments, but for our every moment. In these pages, you'll discover: how to pray a daily, memorable prayer derived from Psalm 51 how to practice daily repentance and soul care how to pursue God and experience his joy in the Christian life This is God’s mercy, and it’s Mercy for Today.
