"The Butterfly Boy" marks the debut as a novelist of Richard Cawley, television chef ("Thats Entertaining, Ready Steady Cook" and food writer "The Artful Cook, The New English Cookery, Not Quite Vegetarian"). Reflecting his own peripatetic life, this accomplished tale is rooted in Australia but includes excursions to London, Provence and the Italian riviera. Michael is about to celebrate his fortieth birthday but he is still recovering from the death of his lover of twelve years and his return to Sydneys bars and clubs is at best wary. Whilst having drinks with friends, Michael sees for the first time a tall, skinny and black -clad youth whom he immediately nicknames the butterfly boy. It is a fateful moment - the beginning of an obsession at times idyllic, at times painful, sometimes destructive. And the Butterfly Boy - beautiful, capricious, sexy - propels him into the world of high fashion, art and music as he flits - butterfly like - from admirer to admirer. Vividly evoking the gay social whirl of Sydney, the tranquillity of a small Provencal town and the excesses of riviera life, Richard Cawley has created a lushly romantic novel peopled by a clutch of unforgettable characters who remain with the reader long after his tale has been told.

This book was born of the realisation that as we move through life our existence changes in ways we could never envisage. I use the metaphor 'Butterfly Boy' as a butterfly starts life as a caterpillar becomes a chrysalis and then blossoms into a butterfly. The butterfly enjoys a freedom of movement and unlike the caterpillar and chrysalis, is not restricted in its ability to travel and can cover much greater distances. In its two previous stages of development it could never have imagined the world as it now sees it. Now it is able to move freely within the confines of nature, moving where it wills, exploring its wonderful gift of life with delight, filled with exhilaration by its new sense of liberty. Now, finally having shaken off those past restrictions it is able to search and learn at a faster pace than ever before. The Monarch butterfly for instance migrates from southern Canada to winter in central Mexico. In the late winter/early spring, the adult monarchs leave the mountain range in Mexico and travel north. Mating occurs and the females begin seeking out milkweed to lay their eggs, usually first in northern Mexico and southern Texas. The caterpillars hatch and develop into adults that move north, where more offspring can go as far as Central Canada until the next migratory cycle. These distances are impossible for the chrysalis and caterpillar.Other species of butterflies evolve symbiotic and parasitic relationships with others like ants. Some species are pests and in their larval stages damage domestic crops or trees. Other species are agents of pollination of some plants, and caterpillars of a few butterflies (e.g., Harvesters) eat harmful insects. All these traits are seen in humans too and we all choose a path to follow but unlike most insects and animals we can choose to change. As we grow and develop we gather knowledge that allows us to change from the caterpillar stages of early childhood through the chrysalis stages of later childhood and early adulthood where we can choose, if we are courageous enough, to make a life of our own choosing as opposed to one thrust upon us.This first book in the series is of Butterfly Boy's early years and is based, as are the other forthcoming books, on real life experiences. One that if as a young boy who dreamed of being a train driver like his beloved granddad you had told him what he would grow up to become instead would have said you were insane. Then again as a young man in the forces who now dreamed of being a successful business man like his other grandfather, less loved than the other but most certainly respected for his achievements. If you told him then what he would become later in life, he would again have said you were insane.Anyway let us now start the journey of this unusual but true life story, but where to commence? Well I guess the beginning is the best place. Enter into this world another new life form and the commencement of its own special journey.
