The purpose of this research was to investigate how consumer animosity directly and indirectly affects buying intentions of foreign brands in the context of the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay crisis. Theories of social identity and realistic group conflicts served as a theoretical framework to model the impact of consumer animosity on purchase intentions. The results suggest that the stable and situational animosities led to slightly lower product quality assessment while consumer ethnocentrism did not, indicating that the latter is a less significant predictor of product judgment than both animosities. Furthermore, perceived social pressure from significant others has triple capabilities to significantly influence product quality assessment, boycott motivations, and buying intentions. In addition, the impact of animosity on purchase intentions was completely mediated by boycott motivations whereas the impact of consumer ethnocentrism and subjective norm was partially mediated through boycott motivations. By contrast, product judgment was a weaker mediator and only partially mediated the relationship between subjective norm and the intention of purchase. The present study provides theoretical and empirical insights into direct and indirect effects of consumer animosity on purchase intentions, which may be beneficial for both manufacturers and retailers who suffer from the boycott of foreign merchandise.

Boycotts have been the subject of sensational news stories and serious business school cases. Analysis shows they can serve as powerful levers to drive social change - or fizzle out without accomplishing any of their aims. Why are some boycotts successful while others fail? To answer this question, this thesis examines available research on the political, economic, and social impact boycotts have historically had, couples this review with analysis of more recent boycotts, and incorporates the perspectives of boycott participants and targets to produce an oral history. Those interviewed have orchestrated, participated in, observed, or been the objects of significant boycotts undertaken across several market sectors in support of different social justice causes: Workers' Rights, LGBT/Q Rights, and Reproductive Freedom. Their personal accounts provide insights into the issues at stake in each campaign, explain the rationale behind (and unintended consequences of) using boycotting as a mechanism to achieve objectives, and demonstrate that it is not solely the bottom line which determines a boycott's effectiveness, but a combination of factors, including the target, timing, and tactics.

In the late twentieth century, nothing united union members, progressive students, Black and Chicano activists, Native Americans, feminists, and members of the LGBTQ+ community quite as well as Coors beer. They came together not in praise of the ice cold beverage but rather to fight a common enemy: the Colorado-based Coors Brewing Company. Wielding the consumer boycott as their weapon of choice, activists targeted Coors for allegations of antiunionism, discrimination, and conservative political ties. Over decades of organizing and coalition-building from the 1950s to the 1990s, anti-Coors activists molded the boycott into a powerful means of political protest. In this first narrative history of one of the longest boycott campaigns in U.S. history, Allyson P.
