If "slavery" is defined broadly to include bonded child labor and forced prostitution, there are upward of 25 million slaves in the world today. Individuals and groups are freeing some slaves by buying them from their enslavers. But slave redemption is as controversial today as it was in pre-Civil War America. In Buying Freedom, Kwame Anthony Appiah and Martin Bunzl bring together economists, anthropologists, historians, and philosophers for the first comprehensive examination of the practical and ethical implications of slave redemption. While recognizing the obvious virtue of the desire to buy the freedom of slaves, the contributors ask difficult and troubling questions: Does redeeming slaves actually increase the demand for--and so the number of--slaves? And what about cases where it is far from clear that redemption will improve the material condition, or increase the real freedom, of a slave? Buying Freedom includes essays by the editors and by Dean Karlan and Alan Krueger, Carol Ann Rogers and Kenneth Swinnerton, Arnab Basu and Nancy Chau, Stanley Engerman, Jonathan Conning and Michael Kevane, Jok Madut Jok, Ann McDougall, Lisa Cook, Margaret Kellow, John Stauffer, and Howard McGary.

Freedom S Currency written by Julia Wallace Bernier and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-24 with History categories.

Enslaved people lived in a world in which everything had a price. Even freedom. Freedom’s Currency follows enslaved people’s efforts to buy themselves out of slavery across the United States from the American Revolution to the Civil War. In the first comprehensive study of self-purchase in the nation, Julia Wallace Bernier reveals how enslaved people raised money, fostered connections, and made use of slavery’s systems of value and exchange to wrest control of their lives from those who owned them. She chronicles the stories of famous fugitives like Frederick Douglass, who, with the help of friends and supporters, purchased his freedom to protect himself against the continued legal claims of his enslavers and the possibility of recapture. She also shows how enslaved fathers like Lunsford Lane and mothers like Elizabeth Keckley tried to secure lives for their families outside of slavery. Freedom’s Currency argues that freedom played a central role in the social and economic lives of the enslaved and in the ways that these aspects of their lives overlapped. This intimate portrait of community illuminates the complexity of enslaved people’s ideas about their place at the intersection of slavery and American capitalism and their attempts to value freedom above all. Given the stakes—liberation or remaining enslaved—it is an account of both triumph and devastating failure.

Buy Your Freedom written by Todd Nethercutt and has been published by Page Publishing Inc this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-18 with Business & Economics categories.

Have you ever found yourself sitting in front of the TV watching "House Hunters" or a similar show, to see a young, newlywed couple, fresh out of school, looking at starter homes in the $800,000 range while thinking to yourself, "How in the world can they afford that"? This book holds the answer to that question, and many more. A long time ago, in an America far, far away, we lived within our means, spent no more than our paychecks would allow, and only resorted to borrowing money from other people in the most severe of economic disasters or emergencies. Oh, how times change. Today, we borrow money from other people for almost every expense over $200. We now call it financing, or buying on credit. This is simply borrowing money from other people to buy the things we normally could not afford. In addition, most of us know personally (or have gone through the process ourselves) someone who has declared bankruptcy to get out of their debt problems. This is also normal, and even approved practice today. What we have somehow evolved to consider to be normal "acceptable rules of finance" is shameful, at best. There have been countless books on personal finance published before this one. They typically cover the same topics – Make a monthly budget, wisely-choose your mutual funds, put away an emergency fund for a rainy day, save something for retirement, and something for your kids’ education. Based on our current financial predicament, these books apparently have not worked very well. This book is not one of those. This book is more of a Chuck-Norris-Roundhouse-Kick to the Financial Face. Most of you will not be prepared to hear what this book says, but sometimes, tough love is the best kind. You have been warned. Buyer Beware.
