Excerpt from Byron and Byronism in America I must especially thank Prof. K. D. Bulbring of Bonn, Germany, whose lectures and seminar aroused a long dor mant interest in Byron, and Prof. W. P. Trent of Columbia University, whose understanding of America stimulated, after a prolonged sojourn in Europe, my interest in our own literary life. I am indebted to the Library of the Uni versity at Bonn for opportunity to gather, during the summer before last, materials for the introductory chapter; for the rest to the courtesies of the Lenox and Astor Libraries of New York, the Public Library and the Athenaeum of Bos ton, the Library of Harvard University, and that of Brown University, where Prof. W. C. Bronson Obtained for me the privileges of the Harris Collection of American Verse. To the unfailing courtesies of Mr. Erb of the Columbia Library, in common with many students of the University, I owe also not a little. I am indebted to my father for editorial suggestions and to The Nichols Press for courte sies in the printing. But circumstances, attending both the preparation and the proofreading, may have somewhat hindered me in turning all this kind assistance to best ao count, and I am alone responsible for any errors and other shortcomings that the reader may detect. Excerpt from A Selection From the Works of Lord Byron Byron with foolish faces of praise. It is of little moment to him or to us that they have long since ceased to cackle and begun to hiss. They have become used to better verse and carefuller workmen and must be forgiven if after such training they cannot at once appreciate the splendid and im perishable excellence which covers all his offences and outweighs all his defects: the excellence of sincerity and strength. Without these no poet can live; but few have ever had so much of them as Byron. His sincerity indeed is difficult to discover and define; but it does in effect lie at the root of all his good works: deformed by pretension and defaced by as sumption, masked by folly and veiled by affectation but perceptible after all, and priceless. Excerpt from Lord Byron; Arnold and Swinburne Was it any wonder that these masters of cunning technique, gold smiths who could carve and chase with the art of a Benvenuto Cellini cups and chalices of antique fashion, or the lesser moulders of ballads in blue china, fragrant with the pot-pourri of the'romantic Middle Ages, were startled and indignant when commanded to do reverence to the crudities of Byron's earliest verses, the flamboyant improvisations of his verse tales and even of the greater Childe Harold, supported by short selections from the rich and abounding life of that shocking and delightful poem Don Juan, that great epic of modern Europe? Allxattempts to rehabilitate Byron, Professor Saintsbury felt able to declare in 1896, 'have certainly never yet succeeded either with the majority of competent critics or with the majority of readers of poetry'. And in his vivacious record of personal adventures in the French novel he tells us roundly that while Byronism did much mischief on the Continent, with us, though it made a great stir, it really did little harm except to some silly women. Counter-jumpers like Thackeray's own Pogson worshipped the noble poet boys of nobler stamp like Tennyson thought they worshipped him, but if they were going to become men of affairs forgot all about him; if they were to be poets took to Keats and Shelley as models, not to him. Critics hardly took h1m seriously, except for non-literary reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Ordered Love written by Louis J. Kern and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-01 with History categories.

An Ordered Love is the first detailed study of sex roles in the utopian communities that proposed alternatives to monogamous marriage: The Shakers (1779-1890), the Mormons (1843-90), and the Oneida Community (1848-79). The lives of men and women changed substantially when they joined one of the utopian communities. Louis J. Kern challenges the commonly held belief that Mormon polygamy was uniformly downgrading to women and that Oneida pantagamy and Shaker celibacy were liberating for them. Rather, Kern asserts that changes in sexual behavior and roles for women occurred in ideological environments that assumed women were inferior and needed male guidance. An elemental distrust of women denied the Victorian belief in their moral superiority, attacked the sanctity of the maternal role, and institutionalized the dominance of men over women. These utopias accepted the revolutionary idea that the pleasure bond was the essence of marriage. They provided their members with a highly developed theological and ideological position that helped them cope with the ambiguities and anxieties they felt during a difficult transitional stage in social mores. Analysis of the theological doctrines of these communities indicates how pervasive sexual questions were in the minds of the utopians and how closely they were related to both reform (social perfection) and salvation (individual perfection). These communities saw sex as the point at which the demands of individual selfishness and the social requirements of self-sacrifice were in most open conflict. They did not offer their members sexual license, but rather they established ideals of sexual orderliness and moral stability and sought to provide a refuge from the rampant sexual anxieties of Victorian culture. Kern examines the critical importance of considerations of sexuality and sexual behavior in these communities, recognizing their value as indications of larger social and cultural tensions. Using the insights of history, psychology, and sociology, he investigates the relationships between the individual and society, ideology and behavior, and thought and action as expressed in the sexual life of these three communities. Previously unused manuscript sources on the Oneida Community and Shaker journals and daybooks reveal interesting and sometimes startling information on sexual behavior and attitudes.
