Zum Buch Zum 250. „Geburtstag“ des Verlages C.H.BECK hat der bekannte Rechtshistoriker Uwe Wesel dessen Geschichte nachgezeichnet. Dabei konzentriert er sich auf die Entwicklung des rechtswissenschaftlichen Programmbereichs, wirft aber auch einige Schlaglichter auf das geisteswissenschaftliche Verlagsgeschehen. Er beschreibt die Verlegerfamilie über sechs Generationen hinweg und stellt das Verlagsgeschehen in den maßgeblichen politischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Kontext. Damit ist ein anschauliches Werk entstanden, das den Fortgang eines bedeutenden Verlagshauses, aber ebenso ein Stück Geistesgeschichte in Deutschland beschreibt. Die Darstellung beginnt 1763 im beschaulichen Nördlingen. Wesel zeigt auf, wie sich das rechtswissenschaftliche Profil des Verlages von ersten Anfängen über eine zunehmende Bedeutung im Königreich Bayern und im Deutschen Reich unter Otto von Bismarck bis hin zu einem führenden juristischen Fachverlag entwickelt hat. Er benennt die Faktoren, welche diesen Prozess ermöglicht haben: die politischen Veränderungen, einen sich wandelnden Markt für juristische Werke, die maßgeblichen Verlegerpersönlichkeiten, zentrale Werke und ihre prominenten Autoren, aber auch den Erwerb des Berliner „Verlages von Otto Liebmann“ Ende 1933. Dann beginnt die dunkelste Zeit der deutschen Geschichte und Wesel zeigt auf, wie sich Dr. Heinrich Beck trotzdem bemüht hat, seinen „Verlag über die Runden zu bringen“ und welche Konzessionen er deshalb gemacht hat. Eingehend wird zudem die bundesdeutsche Entwicklung nachgezeichnet. Geschildert wird der konsequente Aufbau eines umfassenden juristischen Verlagsprogramms, das unter dem heutigen Verleger, Dr. Hans Dieter Beck, in der juristischen Fachwelt große Aufmerksamkeit gewonnen hat. Dabei werden wichtige Ereignisse der neuesten Zeitgeschichte und ihre Folgen für das Verlagsprogramm behandelt, etwa die deutsche Wiedervereinigung das Entstehen neuer Rechtsgebiete und der Aufbruch in ein elektronisches Zeitalter. Zum Autor Uwe Wesel war Ordinarius für Römisches Recht, Bürgerliches Recht und Zivilprozeßrecht an der Freien Universität Berlin. Er ist Mitglied des deutschen P.E.N.-Zentrums und Autor zahlreicher rechts- und zeithistorischer Werke.

The present volume collects eighteen essays exploring the history of ancient Near Eastern studies. Combining diverse approaches—synthetic and analytic, diachronic and transnational—this collection offers critical reflections on the who, why, and how of this cluster of fields. How have political contexts determined the conduct of research? How do academic agendas reflect larger social, economic, and cultural interests? The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Der Verlag bemuhte sich einerseits darum, die Qualitatsstandards eines wissenschaftlichen Universalverlages aufrecht zu erhalten, suchte aber zugleich die Nahe zu staatlichen Institutionen und dort angesehenen Wissenschaftlern. Die Geschaftspolitik des Verlages Walter de Gruyter unterschied sich damit nicht von der vieler anderer mittelstandischer Unternehmen im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland.
