1 The Purpose of This Text This text has been written in response to two trends that have gained considerable momentum over the past few years. The first is the decision by many undergraduate engineering and science departments to abandon the traditional programming course based on the aging Fortran 77 standard. This decision is not surprising, considering the more modem features found in languages such as Pascal and C. However, Pascal never developed a strong following in scientific computing, and its use is in decline. The new Fortran 90 standard defines a powerful, modem language, but this long-overdue redesign of Fortran has come too late to prevent many colleges and universities from switching to C. The acceptance of C by scientists and engineers is based perhaps as. much on their perceptions of C as an important language, which it certainly is, and on C programming experience as a highly marketable skill, as it is on the suitability of C for scientific computation. For whatever reason, C or its derivative C++ is now widely taught as the first and often only programming language for undergraduates in science and engineering. The second trend is the evolving nature of the undergraduate engineering curriculum. At a growing number of institutions, the traditional approach of stressing theory and mathematics fundamentals in the early undergraduate years, and postponing real engineering applications until later in the curriculum, has been turned upside down.

Many books focus on increasing the quality of software through the use of formal methods. However, most books embrace one particular method, and present it as the suggested solution for the software reliability problem. This book presents a wider picture of formal methods, through a collection of notations and techniques. It compares them, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. One of the main challenges of formal methods is in transferring the tech nology developed by researchers to the software development community. Re cently, we seem to be starting to have a better understanding of the important ingredients of formal methods tools. This manifests itself in the growing ac ceptance of such tools in the software and hardware development industry. Ideally, formal methods need to be intuitive to use (preferably using graphi cal interfaces), do not impose on the user an extensive learning period, and incur only small overhead to the development process. Formal methods are much more acceptable today than ten or twenty years ago, in particular in the hardware industry. Yet there is still a lively contention between different approaches.

The theory of computing provides computer science with concepts, models, and formalisms for reasoning about both the resources needed to carry out computa tions and the efficiency of the computations that use these resources. lt provides tools to measure the difficulty of combinatorial problems both absolutely and in comparison with other problems. Courses in this subject help students gain an alytic skills and enable them to recognize the limits of computation. For these reasons, a course in the theory of computing is usually required in the graduate computer science curriculum. The barder question to address is which topics such a course should cover. We believe that students should learn the fundamental models of computation, the limitations of computation, and the distinctions between feasible and intractable. In particular, the phenomena ofNP-completeness and NP-hardness have pervaded much of science and transformed computer science. One option is to survey a large nurober of theoretical subjects, typically focusing on automata and formal languages. However, these subjects are less important to theoretical computer sci ence, and to computer science as a whole, now than in the past. Many students have taken such a course as part of their undergraduate education. We chose not to take that route because computability and complexity theory are the subjects that we feel deeply about and that we believe are important for students to learn. Furthermore, a graduate course should be scholarly. lt is better to treat important topics thoroughly than to survey the field.

All disciplines of science and engineering use numerical methods for complex problem analysis, due to the highly mathematical nature of the field. Analytical methods alone are unable to solve many complex problems engineering students and professionals confront. Introduction to MATLAB® Programming for Engineers and Scientists examines the basic elements of code writing, and describes MATLAB® methods for solving common engineering problems and applications across the range of engineering disciplines. The text uses a class-tested learning approach and accessible two-color page design to guide students from basic programming to the skills needed for future coursework and engineering practice.
