Le 19e volume des Cahiers d'Etudes Hongroises et Finlandaises, "Marges, interstices, contacts", veut témoigner de la vitalité des études finno-ougriennes en France aujourd'hui. Issus pour la plupart de la 6e journée d'études consacrée aux langues, littératures et cultures de cette aire linguistique, organisée par le Centre Interuniversitaire d'Etudes Hongroises et Finlandaises le 14 juin 2013, les 13 articles qui constituent le recueil abordent des sujets variés, du same Kildin au design d'Alvar Aalto, du cinéma de Béla Tarr à la fricative laryngale en vepse, des termes d'adresse en hongrois à la poésie d'Eeva-Liisa Manner. Les éditeurs du recueil souhaitent que ces textes puissent offrir aux lecteurs des résultats de recherches actuelles, des pistes vers des investigations futures, ainsi que des supports pour l'enseignement universitaire. La publication aujourd'hui d'un tel ouvrage appelle une réflexion sur la place et le rôle de notre champ de recherche clans le monde universitaire contemporain. L'unité des études finno-ougriennes a été fondée sur l'appartenance des langues finno-ougriennes à la même famille linguistique. Ce fondement paraît si évident qu'on en oublie facilement son caractère historique. Cette appartenance commune continue toujours à alimenter la recherche en linguistique, mais on peut se demander quelle est sa fonction dans d'autres domaines de recherche. Dans le contexte actuel, riche en défis, écueils et opportunités, les articles publiés dans ce volume montrent que les chercheurs actifs dans notre domaine sont prêts à aborder la complexité du monde moderne et les transformations qui mettent en échec les vieilles configurations du savoir ; mais ils montrent aussi, et peut-être davantage, que notre domaine inspire toujours des travaux qui suivent une logique autre qu'utilitaire et qui unissent la rigueur scientifique à une visée émancipatrice.

This volume, the fifth in the series Case and Grammatical Relations across Languages, is devoted to genitive constructions in a range of Indo-European languages (Russian, French, Romanian, German and Swedish), as well as Finnish, Bantu languages and Northern Akhvakh (Northeast Caucasian). Definitions of genitives typically start out from the notion of an inflectional marker, often suffixal, that marks dependency relations of a noun phrase with respect to another noun phrase and conveys possessive meaning. The contributions in this volume demonstrate a huge range of variation in genitives, semantically (from possessive meaning to generalized dependency), morphologically (from affixes to different types of clitics) and syntactically (from adnominal uses to argument relations and adjunct uses). The volume contains both general surveys of genitives and case studies of the semantics, pragmatics and historical development of specific genitive constructions. It will be of interest to scholars and students in syntax, semantics, morphology, typology, and historical linguistics.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

If, as we believe, the history of languages is the history of the construction of an ideal artefact that permits a specific interpretation of the linguistic reality and helps to approve and assimilate a certain zone of diversity, enabling the accumulation of collective historical knowledge and making us identify it with a social community and a territory, then it must be agreed that languages are extremely complex entities. The new linguistic diversity that cultural globalisation and recent population movements have installed in most traditional linguistic territories has probably put the ideology of the national language into a state of crisis and, as a consequence, has made the ancient, intrinsic diversity of all languages visible, at least to the extent that this is still possible. Nowadays, then, the old linguistic diversity of dialects, of parlances, of local lexicons and the cultural forms that are reflected in these, of varieties and previously unsuccessful linguistic entities has been given a new opportunity in a world where the cohesion of societies and the welfare of citizens must be guaranteed using all available means. Looked at this way, the intricacy of languages may even open up an opportunity for local economic and social development.

Contexts of Subordination: Cognitive, typological and discourse perspectives is a collection of articles that approaches linguistic subordination as a semantico-grammatical and pragmatic phenomenon. The volume brings together cognitive, interactional and typological perspectives, and is characterised by extensive use of multi-genre data. The collection aims at a more precise understanding of subordination by emphasizing its pragmatic and contextual nature.
