Excerpt from Calabar and Its Mission Advancing years indicating that I must soon lay aside the work in which I have been so long engaged, some of my brethren made the request that, as I had been connected with the Mission since its commencement, I should make a record of its history. Not being now able, in our rude country, to discharge the more active duties of the Mission, I had it in my power to comply with their request. The history of the Mission is very much the beginning of the history of the country, which has just now taken an important step, in requesting to be taken up as a British colony. I have enjoyed a melancholy pleasure, while writing the narrative, in bringing before me, and renewing intercourse with those who, during a long series of years, have given their life's labour to the Mission, and from companionship in duty here have gone to join the great company of the redeemed before the throne. They now form part of the cloud of witnesses which surround us, and no doubt rejoice in the progress of that work for which they lived and died. The distance at which I am from the press has made it impossible for me to revise the-proof-sheets; but this office has been kindly performed by Mrs. Edgerley, who was several years in the Mission, to whom I offer my grateful acknowledgments. First published in 1970. This vivid account of the missionary work of the Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell in the West Indies and Central Africa was first published in 1863. During his sixteen years in Jamaica he witnessed the slave revolt and the aftermath of the abolition of slavery. The mission helped former slaves adapt to freedom in new communities. In 1846 he left Jamaica for Calabar in West Africa (now part of Nigeria), and his narrative is one of the best European accounts of pre-colonial Africa. The mission was concerned with ending local practices such as polygamy, human sacrifice and witchcraft, and Waddell formed a close relationship with King Eyo. The book gives considerable detail about the history and culture of the area, as well as on the work of the mission. His work in Calabar is still commemorated there in the Hope Waddell Training Institute, Duke Town.
