Empire Of The Sum The Rise And Reign Of The Pocket Calculator written by Keith Houston and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-22 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The hidden history of the pocket calculator—a device that ushered in modern mathematics, helped build the atomic bomb, and went with us to the moon—and the mathematicians, designers, and inventors who brought it to life. Starting with hands, abacus, and slide rule, humans have always reached for tools to simplify math. Pocket-sized calculators ushered in modern mathematics, helped build the atomic bomb, took us to the bottom of the ocean, and accompanied us to the moon. The pocket calculator changed our world, until it was supplanted by more modern devices that, in a cruel twist of irony, it helped to create. The calculator is dead; long live the calculator. In this witty mathematic and social history, Keith Houston transports readers from the nascent economies of the ancient world to World War II, where a Jewish engineer calculated for his life at Buchenwald, and into the technological arms race that led to the first affordable electronic pocket calculators. At every turn, Houston is a scholarly, affable guide to this global history of invention. Empire of the Sum will appeal to math lovers, history buffs, and anyone seeking to understand our trajectory to the computer age.

Uncover the mysteries that lie within your calculator This remarkable book explores the simple internal calculator processes—algorithms and programs—that tell us, for example, that the cosine of 56? is 0.5591929035. Using carefully constructed diagrams and figures, the author effectively demonstrates how calculator keys compute powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry functions, while also providing insights into simple programming, the conversion between decimal and binary numeration, and perhaps most importantly, the structure of our numeration systems. Many people believe that the processes that drive calculators demand advanced mathematical concepts; however, this book proves that a minimal understanding of algebra and geometry is all that is needed to follow the step-by-step explanations of how scientific calculators work. Inside Your Calculator: From Simple Programs to Significant Insights is a complete and multifaceted exercise in critical thinking. This book features: A detailed explanation of how to use a graphics calculator and program basic functions A discussion of the history of mathematics when appropriate, which provides a foundation for further learning Fundamental mathematical lessons and interesting applications of pre-calculus mathematics A thorough review of the fundamentals of programming, algebra, and geometry needed to gain insight into why the algorithms work and how the results are meaningful in our lives While the simultaneous use of a calculator is not needed to gain insight into how the algorithms work, those who do have a programmable graphics calculator can experiment with the programs presented in the book. These programs may be used on TI-84 and TI-83 calculators, and additional information for other Texas Instruments calculators as well as the Casio FX series is available on the book's related web site. As a result of over fifty years of award-winning teaching experience in both high school and college classrooms, Dr. Rising anticipates and answers potential questions from readers, and he successfully brings this subject alive in an illuminating and entertaining way. This book is therefore not only ideal for undergraduate mathematics majors as either a primary or supplemental text, but it also appeals to anyone with an interest in mathematics and its ideas. Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: 2.7, Education University of Hong Kong (Department of Asian and Policy Studies - Education University of Hong Kong), course: CUM3002 Comparative Curriculum and Pedagogy Studies, language: English, abstract: The implementation of using calculators in the Irish Junior Certificate Mathematics curriculum and examinations brought about discussions about its impact on students’ performance and learning attitudes. To compare the difference before and after implementation, we adopted experimental-type studies to find out the influence. There are two groups of Grade 9 students: the pre-intervention group and the post-intervention group. The research discovered that phase II students (using the calculators) got better Mathematics results and they thought using calculators can reduce the frequency of making mistakes. Despite such contribution, phase I students thought using calculators make students lazy. Based on our research, compulsory use of calculator in Mathematics education is a good decision, as it improved students’ Mathematics performance and students became more motivated to learn. The most important reason of this is because students think using calculator can help them save more time.

How THIS BOOK DIFFERS This book is about the calculus. What distinguishes it, however, from other books is that it uses the pocket calculator to illustrate the theory. A computation that requires hours of labor when done by hand with tables is quite inappropriate as an example or exercise in a beginning calculus course. But that same computation can become a delicate illustration of the theory when the student does it in seconds on his calculator. t Furthermore, the student's own personal involvement and easy accomplishment give hi~ reassurance and en couragement. The machine is like a microscope, and its magnification is a hundred millionfold. We shall be interested in limits, and no stage of numerical approximation proves anything about the limit. However, the derivative of fex) = 67.SgX, for instance, acquires real meaning when a student first appreciates its values as numbers, as limits of 10 100 1000 t A quick example is 1.1 , 1.01 , 1.001 , •••• Another example is t = 0.1, 0.01, in the function e/3t+9-3)/t. ix difference quotients of numbers, rather than as values of a function that is itself the result of abstract manipulation.
