From Spain to China, and from the Middle Ages to our own lifetime, Islamic architecture and calligraphy are inexorably intertwined. Mosques, dervish lodges, mausolea, libraries, even baths and market places bear masterpieces of calligraphy that rival the most refined of books and scrolls.

With the growth of modern information technology, it is time to re-examine the concept and purpose of writing, and question the long cherished idea that the alphabet stands at the apex of a hierarchy towards which all proper forms of writing must necessarily progress. This book shows that the primary purpose of writing is the ability to store and transmit information, information essential to the social, economical and political survival of a particular group. Writing, in whatever form, allows the individual the interact with the group, to acquire an amount of knowledge that far outweighs the scope of memory (oral traditions), and to be free to manipulate this knowledge and arrive at new conclusion. Providing a quick and easy entrance to information related to the subject, the volume contains a network of references leading the reader towards further information, and most entries are listed with bibliographical notes.

Calligraphy can be said to have developed among three of the world's major civilizations - the Arabs (and those who use the Arabic script), whose tradition centres on the preservation of the divine revelation through the Koran; the Chinese (and those who use Chinese script); and the Europeans who adopted the Roman script and laws within a Christian tradition. In this wide-ranging and heavily illustrated study, Albertine Gaur explores the history of calligraphy, and the place of calligraphers, from the earliest times to the present day, within all three of these very different cultures. In addition, she discusses the tools for writing and the development of calligraphy in relation to printing and typography, and examines current trends and the work of contemporary calligraphers.

""Mughal Art"" explores the rich artistic and architectural legacy of the Mughal Empire, revealing how art served as a powerful statement of imperial authority, cultural identity, and religious vision. The book examines the fusion of Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles that defined Mughal artistic expression. The book uniquely synthesizes art historical analysis with cultural and historical context. Mughal painting, particularly miniature painting, served as a crucial medium for documenting court life and illustrating historical events, providing insights into the Mughal worldview. The book argues that the Mughals used art to legitimize their rule and project an image of divinely ordained rulers. The book progresses by first introducing the historical context of the Mughal Empire. It then delves into three key areas: architecture, painting, and gardens. Each chapter explores the evolution and significance of these art forms, from the grand structures like the Taj Mahal to the intricate details of miniature paintings and the symbolic design of Mughal gardens. Finally, the book examines the decline of the Mughal Empire and its lasting legacy on subsequent artistic movements.
